Heya guys,
So a good friend passed away and his wife gave me this Ruger MKII since she knew I had an interest in firearms and wanted it to go somewhere it would be used. Figured I would use this as a camping/pack gun. So I want to ensure it is as accurate as possible. Getting rid of the ugly, cheap scope it has a Ruger model rail installed on it. The factory rear sights are missing. What exact model is this so I can track down the correct rear sights and does anyone have an suggestions on something better than the rear sights. The reason I ask what model is I was checking out Ruger's website and they had bull barrel, taper barrel, and target barrel sights. I know its not a bull barrel , so perhaps the taper barrel since its does go from thick to thin IE: tapers. And when measuring the length is it like shotguns and rifles measured from the bolt face to the end or the end of the receiver to the end of the barrel in which it is a 4 1/2 inch barrel. Was guessing this would be correct: Ruger Rear Sights PICS:

| Yep tapered barrel. These would be awesome for day camping. Fiber optics for easier to see sights. |

This one is a Model KMK6 and has a 6 inch barrel. The owners manual is available in PDF format on the Ruger website. At some point it was drilled and tapped for the scope base. https://ruger-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/_manuals/markII.pdf |

It looks like yours started out as a non-adjustable sight pistol - I have the same gun but in a 6" length.
If you want to have a adjustable rear sight, this is the best option I've seen... LPA rear sight Another option is to leave the rail on the gun and add a red dot sight - it makes for a very fast & fun shooting session. Some Red Dot Options Ruger MK-II's are great guns - enjoy the memory of your friend. Take care, Bob S. |

That picture is of a 6" fixed sight model. As stated KMK6.
I never measured, but try measuring from the bolt face to the end of the barrel. Take a .22 cleaning rod, stick it down the barrel, mark then remove and measure. For example, the match version in those days had a 6-7/8" barrel and adjustable sights. Still tapered, but heavier barrel. You can see pictures of them all over. |
| While you are doing things to fix up the "new" gun, you might want to consider one of my pet peeves: the mag release. I found the dinky mag release on my MK II to be a major pain in the a$$. I finally settled on a big paddle release, I forget whose, that I modified by rounding the sharp corners. Now I have a pretty reasonable release, even though I still prefer the Browning style release of the MK IIIs. |
