Anyone know the least destructive way to remove rust spots from a gun? I moved and had to put a few guns in storage for a while. I did the wrong thing and put them in padded cases before storing them. I know now that's the wrong thing to do. I have several blued guns with rust spots on the barrels and even one stainless one with one large rust spot on top of the barrel. None of the damage is bad enough to affect the operation of the guns, but it sure sucks to have a rust spot or two on the barrels. Are there any chemical type rust removers or reblueing products that I can use. Fine emery and steel wool is only going to make a bigger spot to deal with. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me! |

The gunsmith method to remove rust without further blue damage: Buy a can of Kroil or a good penetrating fluid. Liberally apply a thick coat to the rusty areas and let soak overnight or even a few days. This will infiltrate the rust and soften it. Buy a brass "tooth brush" and some brass shim stock or a piece of scrap brass. File the brass into a chisel or knife edge scraper. DO NOT use a penny, these are NOT copper these days and can do damage. After soaking, apply more Kroil to the rust, and use the brass scraper to scrape the heavy, crusty rusted areas. After scraping, apply more Kroil and use the brass tooth brush to liberally scrub the rusty areas. The brass will break up the rust without damaging the bluing like steel wool will, even fine steel wool. Once the rust is off, wipe dry, then apply a coat of CLP Breakfree. This will prevent further rust, and will continue to "work" on any remaining rust. With the rust off, there will be tiny pits and missing blue where the rust was. Without refinishing, there's nothing you can do about this damage. |
