Seems the biggest maintenance item on my hand guns is tearing them down to reoil to prevent rust.
If it sits on my hip it gets field stripped every week. But I'm constantly outside in sweaty heat or cold humidity (condensation). My Kimber CDP needs constant attention to the barrel and safety, So who has the most corrosion resistant guns out there? Ok, glock is the easiest awnser, duh. What about the FN p45, FN 5.7? Anything other than Glock look a likes. (I allready have a glock, so no XD etc.) I really like the looks of the FN stuff. |

I've carried a lot of different pistols and I live in an area where most summer days are 110 and above. I've managed to rust stainless steel guns. The only gun I've ever carried and haven't needed to do a detailed cleaning and oiling at the end of every day to avoid rust (and some even that wasn't enough) are the Glocks I own. Shake them off at the end of the day, wipe them down and they're good. So I'd look at any other guns that have a finish like Glocks Tenifer. Also, look at stainless guns that have a high level of nickel and chrome in their alloy. The SS gun I rusted was the slide on a S&W 3913. I've been carrying a Ruger SP-101 for a few weeks, but it hasn't had to go through a few summer days yet so it's too early to tell. |

Glock, HK, Walther (p99) all use a similar finish. You could always send you gun out for a type finish. +1 on the Glock, HK and P99 finishes. Also, the S&W M&P uses Melonite, which I thought was supposed to be very similar to Glock's Tenifer. And as Gregory said, you could always get what you like refinished... |

Cool thanks guys. I don't like my Kimber playing shelf queen. I can allways clean the outside of the barrel(steelwool and atf) and the slide is spotless. I might disassemble it and have the trigger, saftey, grip saftey, slide lock, refinished. I should do the grip frame to, so it matches.
Just have to figure out what refinishing is close to tennifer and black. |

Rust resistance is one of several reason that I carry a Glock.
I would say that the Glock-like pistols could provide the same corrosion resistance, though I don't have any extensive first hand experience carrying other polymer framed pistols. The Sig pistols with the stainless slide (are all of them stainless?), the HK finish, and whatever Smith is putting on the M&P are probably similar in function to Tennifer. Not sure about the XD. Tennifer is just a trade name for a certain kind of surface treatment. I will say that even Glocks will rust, because mine has; mostly on the barrel where it contacts the slide at the muzzle and on top of the chamber, and also the sights will rust. I even had a chrome slide P3AT as a backup that would rust in the summer if neglected. A Kydex holster will help out some with the rust. A leather holster will soak right through with sweat if you're out working hard in the summer heat. Good idea to let everything dry out after the day is done. |

I recommend you ask for advice from marines or Sailors in the Hall of Heroes forum.
Most would know alot about how to best maintain and protect firearms in a high corrosion enviroment. I would recommend a stinless frame with a melonite finish, FN meets this, Glocks are pretty rust proof, Walther' sPPS & P99s are good but not as good as the previous as the decock button holds condensation and may cause rust. This happened to my S&W 99 C, it was easy to fix though. maintenace and not the finsih are the key to avoiding rust. get a good oil apply it often be vigilant. |

I used to own quite a few Glocks and the dams sights were the only thing that would rust. I used to love that about them. The older Springfield XDs are the Anti-Glock. If you listen real carefully at night, you can hear them rust.
Yes, I own one. Yes, I sold a Glock to get one. Yes, I still would do the same thing again. Yes, I want to send it back to be Tuffcoated or whatever they do. Wes |
