Hey guys I have a SA 1911 the GI model and it like to eject the brass straight back and hit me in the face, other than wear shooting glasses what can I do to fix this?

A gunsmith can probably adjust your extractor a bit so as to allow the case to hit the ejector at a slightly different angle, thus changing the ejection path.

A different powered recoil spring may change this path as well, but this is guesswork on my part.

Good luck!

I think the GI does not have an extended ejector, that should also help with shooting brass to the side.

Do this:
1. Check the extractor tension, it must hold empties long enough to properly eject, also make shure that the extractor chanel is clean.
2. Change the recoil spring with stronger one and weaker one (normally the stronger one will do the trick, as probably your slide have to much of velocity going back). To do this get one from Wolf, if all turns OK, you all set, if not, cut one coil of your original spring to make it a bit lighter (you have nothing to loose, you have good Wolf spring).
3. The extended ejector will help, but your gun could exibit problems ejecting live rounds

With a stone in hand, break the ejection side and top edge of the ejector.
Note: if need, do a google search on 1911 ejector tuning.

With the ejection side/top edges of the ejector still sharp, the case does not rotate off the ejector.  Instead, the ejector sharp edges dig into the back of the case and whips the ejected case straight up/back at you.

With the standard ejector contacts edges stone rolled, the ejection will still be up and but more to the normal right ejection path.  With a extended ejector (again the contact edges stone rolled), the ejection is lower out of the slide, and if the ejection port is not lowered, the case will ding off the bottom of the port, and most likely be thrown right back in your face like before.

I had a Gi model Colt 1991 that ran like that, had a friendly gunsmith lower the ejection port and re-blue it.

No more empties in my face.  Hooray!

You can wear a cowboy hat to catch the brass.

Your extractor is a small percentage of the deflection (into your face) problem.  As stated above, it is the Ejector.  Your GI is most likely to have a standard ejector.  I can't remember if Springfield puts extended in there or not.  The month I worked there isn't stored in the memory banks.

The angle as suggested is correct, and it does keep the rotation and deflection low, out the side rather than the top or high right.
