I've just bought my first 1911 and I've been looking at both target and SD ammo.

How many rounds do you fire before being satisfied with reliability enough to buy in bulk (say 1k rounds)?

The last thing I want to do is buy 1k rounds of ammo that wont run reliably in my 1911, but I want to take advantage of the prices of bulk buying.

Is 50 enough? 100? 500?

Thoughts?

If its a Quality 1911 it will feed any 45acp ammo
I like to fire 500rds on a pistol thats New to me
Not so much break in but to get use to it

BTW I like shooting  Lead Wad Cutters in my Colt Combat Elite

For self-defense ammo, I need to run at least 100 flawless rounds through it before I trust it. Cheap insurance.

Agreed, and 250 is better, but at today's prices for top tier SD ammo that is steep. I have yet to see a 1911 that won't feed the Federal HST, which is what I carry...230gr JHP standard velocity...YMMV

Well, everyone has different standards.

IIRC,  Larry Vickers suggests 1,000 flawless rds. of hardball ammo plus 200 rds. of SD ammo before he'll trust one for carry.

I think 800 rds of hardball plus 150 rds of jhp ammo with zero hiccups are probably good enough.

I run anywhere between 100-200 rounds of whatever ammo I intend to use for social encounters.  That's after at least a 500 round break-in with cheaper practice ammo.  If the firearm does not function properly during break-in... it's going to be a lot more flawless rounds until I trust it.

As was mentioned before SD ammo isn't cheap so I don't find myself throwing hundreds of rounds of it downrange, but 100-200 is cheap insurance for something I may have to trust my life to one day.

100 to 200

I would still train for malfuntions.
