If you were in a shtf situation, which caliber handgun would you rather have out of a .40 or .45? |
Ahhh! Very good grasshopper. This is the kind of reasoning I was looking for. As for the null, spent 10 minutes and never could figure out how to get rid of that. |

Couple of food for thought items. Again, keeping these two rounds in mind. What kind of ammo availability would you have in your area (whats popular in your area, what does local LE use, etc)? How easily could you obtain ammo for which caliber? Which caliber do you feel more comfortable with/can shoot better? Etc........ |

.45 for me...I shoot this round better & more accurately...in competition anyway. Have no idea what would happen in Combat but I presume I would fall back on how I train/compete. I understand that some of the Marines have gone back to .45 citing it for better stopping power...read a post here awhile back about it. |
My thoughts also. As good as .40S&W is, there's just a lot more .45's in circulation. Hence in a total SHTF/TEOTWAWKI situation ammo would be easier to scrounge. |
Do I want a thump or a thud? Local LE uses Glock .40 cal. I don't reload .40 cal. I have several .45s. I enjoy shooting the G-22. The .40 is afterbirth (not the placenta)of the 10MM. The .45 spawned the 45 Win Mag. (moot point) If its number of shots per gun, the .40 gets the nod. If 8 rounds at a time suffice, its the .45. I love variety. Also, which ever is the closest when needed. All that and still not really an answer...yet, I'm workin' on it. Final answer is the .45 due to having the most magazines and ammunition for them, lots more.

For your poll I would have to say .45 because I will never own a .40. If I had my choice I would say 9X23 Winchester because I also reload .223. Same shell plate, same primers. I hate changing the $@#@$*#* primer system on my 650 when the S isn't about to HTF.
Actually, they never gave them up. |
LOL! I wasnt exactly thinking in those lines. More like, total SHTF, might have to scrounge ammo from any source, downed officers, abandoned police stations, etc. Really far fetched thoughts. Really good answers by everyone. I really wanted to make this a thinking thing, to try to get you to think about your area, what you could get, where, how, etc.., if things ever did go really bad. I love both rounds too. If I have to pick a favorite, it would be .45. I just like them. My accuracy with both is fine, so that being said, I want the biggest hole possible. .40 is a very popular round here. Its in all the stores. 3000+ member police/sheriffs office uses .40. .40 would be relatively easy for me to acquire in dire times. With that known, that means I have to stock up on .45 more myself if I will want it to be my main sidearm caliber. Anyway, just trying to do a little something to break the monotony and get your mind to stirring a little. Prepare for the worst, Hope for the best. |
