I'm trying to figure out what would be the best option for a SHTF handgun a revolver or a semi automatic?I currently own a pump shotgun and that is what I plan on staying with as SHTF long gun.
thanks

My wonderful stepdaughter wanted to have some fun with the icons,
how could I say no!

SHTF gun? Glock.

Ill take my semiauto first and revolver as my backup.

Get both.

Autoloader as your primary... SIG P226, CZ 75, Glock 19, S&W M&P...
Revolver as a BUG... S&W (new production no lock) Model 642 or Ruger SP101...

I agree with the other members that says a semi-auto pistol as a primary and revolver as a BUG.

G21 in my Tac vest.

And I'm a 1911 man.

For SHTF you don't want anything finicky.

For how long will the 'S' be 'H'ing the 'F' in this scenario?

Short timeframe: GLOCK 17

Long timeframe: .357 magnum revolver. My choice would be a GP100.

heh, I had the EXACT same thought, I don't even like Glocks but would still say the 17/19, and my GP 100 is pretty much the firearm version of the stone-axe.

Your GP100 is a fancy, new side arm! My Police Service Six- now that's a stone axe! :)

Wilson Combat 1911 if money is not an issue. Gotta love 230 grains FMJ stopping power.... If you think shortages of ammo and mags being an issue, Beretta 92FS aka Beretta M9 pistol. You would potentially be able to "acquire" magazines and 9mm ammo from other sources.

I hate the gun, but I have a Glock 19 in my emergency response bag.  I trust it implicitly, just hate the ergonomics, but I shoot it well enough.

I carry a 1911, and I have a Glock. Either one is a good choice. I like the .45 over the 9mm. +1 on the revolver as a Back Up Gun. I have several to choose from. I would recomend a .357 mag.

13+1 of JHP .45ACP is going to be hard to beat.  I have a TLR1 on mine and keep them in a BladeTech holster.

I dislike them personally, but respect the hell out of them.....

For a permanent, scarred-earth, Mad Max style SHTF, I'm gonna have to say a G17.

Plentiful 9mm ammo, the ubiquity of the G17 and related platforms, etc.

What ever you shoot the best. As for me it will be the same thing I carry now a 1911 and a revolver as a bug.

Based on my newfound interest in the M&P (just got my first –– MP45), I'd agree with this as well so long as spare parts are on hand or can be obtained. I say this mainly because I have an inventory of Glock spare parts, but have yet to build up the same for my M&P. Definitely would be a good SHTF .45.

+1.  Shouldn't need too many spare parts because the thing is built like a tank.  If the shit really hit the fan a rifle would be me primary anyway.

If anything I'd grab my AK first...with my CZ75 as the backup.

Basically, anything that is reliable and you can find ammo for easily.

[#36]
I like my M&P full size 9mm (with Winchester 127gr. +P+).  Truly reliable, fits better in my hand than the Glock, easier to find my natural poa.  Only downside of the M&P (for me anyway) compared to Glock- the way you have to reach in and throw a lever in order to field strip it.  I have over 4K rounds through mine, and not one single failure of any kind whatsoever, right out of the box.  Next pistol will be M&P 45.

Make your own decission. Get off the freaking net, go shoot and find out what works best for yourself!

FYI,
His and hers G19 - 26 and we got plenty of 17 mags w/ 147gr +p gold dots. Good for any situation.

1911 with four seven round mags and two ten rounders, loaded with 230gr FMJ in the holster.

Beretta 92F with four magazines loaded with 124gr JHP in the pack.

M4 long-gun as PRIMARY.

SHTF is long gun business.

Super long term collapse, a revolver would be easier to reload ammo for. The semi-auto, you gotta chase brass to reload. Might not be so easy under the circumstances.

Short term - a SIG is not going to be finicky. Assuming the ammo is available.

For SHTF you want a combat gun, not a "carry gun".

Regardless of what famboys say it's always going to be what's best for you.
9mm is the most common pistol caliber today and still the pistol caliber of the military if that matters to you. It's also cheaper than other rounds too which helps in practice and backstock costs.
