I took my SIG 220ST to the range for the first time today and I am impressed and disapointed in the pistol. The main problem I am having with the pistol is the slide does not lock back most of the time on the last round. It happens with my factorymag and with my Novaks. The only mag it worked with every time was the cheapo 10rd promag I have. They all fed 100% it is just the slide locking back problem. It locks back not problem if no ammo is in the mag it is just when you are shooting it that 80% of the time it will not lock back. Does any one know what causes this? It also seems to shoot high and to the left a little compared to my 1911.

EDIT: It was very accurate and the recoil is very minimal for a .45 which makes it a nice shooter.

The 220 recoil spring is strong...very strong. If the empty mags will lock the slide open when you insert them and pull the slide "smartly" to the rear, but not when shooting, my guess is you are using ammo loaded a bit light for the gun. Clean and lube it good, then run some Gold Dot, SXT, or maybe Golden Sabre 230gr. JHP stuff through it and I will bet it works fine.

No, you do not need to buy premium ammo all the time, but it may take a few hundred rounds to get it running smoothly with something like WW white box or such. More shooting with the non-premium stuff will probably do it also, just not as quickly.

Thanks for the info. Someone told me I may have my thumbs on the slide release also which makes sense. I noticed when I picked it up to day that my thumbs were on where the slide release is. Next time I will get some hotter ammo and pay atention to where my thumbs are.

That was precisely my problem too.  I read about it but didn't think I was doing that, but sure enough when I picked it up one day, my thumb was right on top of it

You may have a weak slide stop spring.  My 220ST was doing the same thing.  I contacted Sig and they said this was a problem in some pistols they send me a new replacement spring.  You can bend the spring a tiny bit  yourself to place more tension on the slide stop and that should solve the problem.

Tahnks. I wonder if wolf makes a replacement. I think I will check.

Bingo. A Wolff recoil spring should solve your problems. I have Wolff springs in all my 1911s and Sigs (which are all the autoloaders I own except a little Kel-Tec), they really smooth things out. And you certainly can't beat the price.

Hitting high and to the left is common when shooting .45, that's just the recoil pattern.  Just practice more and slowly your groups with hit more at the point of aim.  However, check the sights and make sure they are correct too.  Good Luck and enjoy the SIG!
