Looking at a P226 and wondering what thoughts anyone has about this pistol. This is a 9mm.

That's a good gun.

I used one in the police academy and have owned 2 over the years. They fit the hand very well, controls are in the right places and have in-the-mud reliability.

I think it's my favorite 9mm by far. Accurate, dependable and very ergonomic.

The SIG I should have bought. I bought a P220. It's great, but I should've gotten a P226 in 9mm. I like my 45s to be of the 1911 variety.

I'll join the choir.  I have a P226 Elite and P226 ST, both in 9mm.  After some searching, I concluded that for me the P226 series in 9mm is finest combat handgun on earth.

The 226 is my everyday go to gun and I love it.  I traded my Glock 23 for it and have never looked back!  One of the best shooting 9mm's I have owned.  With the 17-18 round mags, you can shoot all day before you have to reload.  You will literally think, "when is this thing going to be empty?"

Great gun!  Don't hesitate to get one!!!!

I have two. They are excellent handguns.

During the army sidearm trials in the mid 80's the P226 was beat out by Beretta only because Beretta bid $20 cheaper per gun.

I own 2 in 9mm, the only 2 9mm's a person "needs" IMO are the Sig 226 and the G19, which I also own.

If you haven't gotten the point yet I will +1 to all the above and say you should buy it. You will not be dissapointed. Sig 226 in 9mm is one of the best pistols on the planet in my opinion.

I have a West German one.  Its reliable and does what it supposed to do, but typical service pistol lousy grip, crappy trigger, clunky and blocky.  Its a German Ruger P89(or 94 in this case).  Its about as sexy as a snow shovel.  If it just sat in a drawer loaded for 10 years I would still never question it in an emergency though(nor would I question the 94 either).  Funny how both pretty much do the exact same thing, and both require you to change your grip the same way to de-cock them.

Its my father's old service pistol with FaxCo police. Its fugly though as the finish is worn through and the sights are dead.  He has a 228 he still caries and all but forgot about the 226.  He gave it to me to clean up a few years ago(it was filthy), and I've had it ever since. I am probably sending it off for a full re-finish in 2 tone, new grips, trigger job, and new meprolights and giving it back to him for his b-day.

If I was going to buy another full-sized all metal 9mm though, It would be a CZ SP101.

If I were to buy a 9mm, it'd be a SIG 226.

But see, this guy named John Moses Browning invented this real special handgun a long time ago...

U mean the P226 is better than the P210?

I'll be the oddball here. I have it in .40

It's pretty darned good in that caliber as well. In fact, I've never shot any other handgun of any caliber more accurately.

I know 9mm vs .40 vs .45 caliber arguments can be argued all day, but the P226 is just a good gun.

Sigs are phenomenally smooth in 9mm.  An absolute joy to shoot.  While a little expensive new, you can find great deals on used ones.

The 226 is a great pistol, but if you shoot thumbs forward you may have an issue with hitting the slide stop with your strong hand thumb preventing the slide from locking back on the last shot.  That and the DA/SA trigger are the only reasons I don't own a Sig anymore.

JMB invented a great pistol, but like I said, "For me, the P226 series in 9mm is the finest combat handgun on earth".  I like shooting 1911's, but I've never owned one.  If I could find one as reliable as a P226 9mm, I'd buy it.

I have a 1995 P226, made in Germany. It has only failed when I failed to make good reloads. Factory ammo has been absolutely 100% since the day I got it.

I needed to put the short trigger in so that I could actually reach the DA pull.

It's my only handgun and I don't feel the need for another one. Any other handguns I get will be in my 'want' category.

Funny, I bought the P226 first then bought the P220.  I wished I had bought the P220 first.

Yeah, I really can't get over them in 9mm. They're awesome.

I had one for a couple of years, and really liked it.  Like everyone else has said, it was reliable and accurate.

I had only one complaint:  it's big.  A 9mm service auto, in my opinion, should be the size of a Glock, CZ75, or BHP.  Since I CCW, I discarded the 226 in favor of a Glock.  That being said, it was a spectacular winter carry piece - big trigger guard, easy to shoot with gloves on, and it was concealable under a winter jacket.  The rest of the year, it would sit in my safe unless I was headed to the range.

There a quality made handgun and shoot and handle nice. I had a P226R for a year or so. In my opinion it is one of the best 9mm's out there. Not the best, because best is subjective and even not best to me, but is one of.
As a lefty, there controls are pretty lousy.
Sig's never had much concern over making more ambidextrous firearms and only really started to think about it these last couple years.
Just the same if your a righty than no worries if you don't care about weakhand use.
If the pistol fits than, you'll probably love it.

Me gots this problem too.  I used to absolutely love shooting sigs...that is until I spent much time shooting the 1911 platform.  Now, I have major issues with my thumb and the slide release.  Still like the sigs though.

P226 is a fine handgun.

Don't overlook the 229, sweetest shooting midsized 9mm out there.  The Gen II SAS models are outstanding.
