How involved is it to change the factory spur hammer to a spur-less one? Is it something I can do myself or does it have to be a trip to the gunsmith? I know how to remove the old hammer, I guess I'm asking if it needs to be fitted.

Seems to me this came up not to long ago, maybe in the revolver forum.  Consensus was yes, it will probably need fitted.  Possibly by Ruger as they may not sell the part.  Very very few "drop in" parts on wheel guns.

It may be easier just to trade what you have for a spurless model.

Check out spurless hammer.

It maybe pricey but his work looks nice.
