I walked into a gun shop earlier with the intent of picking out a new carry 1911. I was trying to make a decision when the guy behind the counter handed me a STI Costa VIP in 9mm. I instantly fell in love with how it felt in my hand, but since I don't know much about it I just put it on layaway. Now that I'm researching it I'm seeing that the mags have to be tuned? Is sti the only option for the mags since they're 120mm? I'm still searching for a carry gun but I'd like to buy this if it's not going to be a hassle. It would make a good hd gun or hunting sidearm. Thoughts?

Its luck of the draw when it comes to the STI 2011 factory mags, sometimes they work just fine right out the box...other
times they may need some tweaking for uber reliability...

With that said, I was told that STI is currently selling only one factory magazine that is tuned straight from the factory with
all brand new pistols from factory authorized dealers...your other option would be buy pre-tuned MBX brand mags at a steep
price over factory mags which are pricey to begin with...

I never quite understood why STI 2011 magazines were/are so expensive compared to other Hi Cap mags and they still need
to be tuned in some cases for proper reliability...? At the price-point they sell for that should not be happening IMHO.

Their C/S seems to be pretty good though, so if you have Issues they should be pretty helpful in getting it resolved in a fairly
quick manner...

The overall quality level is quite good and it should give the owner many thousands of rounds of enjoyable shooting, and they
are made in the USA in Texas...after all they are designed as "race guns" which partially explains the high cost of the pistol...

Good luck with yours and let us know how she shoots.

I just looked at the mbx site and they don't carry the 120mm but they do have the 126 mm. From what I hear they'll work but they stick out a little. Holy hell are they expensive though.

Yeah the 2011 mags are stupid expensive. The platform never really caught on in the mainstream so it is a boutique gun essentially. You rarely see a 2011 outside of gun games

I've had good luck with stock mags.  No tuning, just spring replacement when it stops locking the slide back.  I've been beating on the same 6 mags since 2014 and 19000 rounds later, I've no complaints.  When compared to the Wilson and Tripp mags, they really aren't that expensive.
The 2011 is a damn nice firearm and a joy to shoot.  I was the first at my agency to carry a 2011 on duty, now there are three more.  Not one shooter who's shot the 2011 didn't immediately start plotting the justification and purchase of their own.  I don't think you'll be disappointed with the one you've chosen.

Yeah the MBX 2011 mags are in the neighborhood of $130/$140 versus around $70/$75 for factory STI 2011
mags...I would love to see Mec-Gar make mags for these fine pistols since they know how to make quality
mags at reasonable prices...

Perhaps if Mec-Gar gets enough requests for these mags they will add them to their product listings...one
can only dream at this point I guess...

Mec-Gar does make mags for Para Ordnance P12/P13/P14 series of pistols so they certainly can do the same
for the STI 2011 series without much fuss...

I always wondered what their procedure/requirement is for producing a new model of magazine...group buy
anyone...?

The mags don't really need to be tuned unless you are trying to cram 20 rounds in a 17 round mag.

You may have to do some hunting around for 120mm mags, they are not very common even among STI mag vendors.

Yeah. I called sti and they said it would be 4-8 weeks depending on when they're ordered. I'm tempted to go with something else, but at the same time it is a pretty sweet pistol.

The first batch of the Costa Carry Comp apparently had the wrong height front sights installed.  A bunch of guys on 1911forum were complaining about it.  STI will fix it if you send it back, but to me, it was a pretty shameful error when STI is attempting to approach the Infinity price point with this particular gun.  In my opinion, there is no factory STI worth $3800, I don't care whose name is on the slide.   You are better off going with Infinity or one of the custom builders at that point (again IMO).

If this was $3800 I wouldn't have even thought about getting it. This model is closer to $2k.
