OK, so I couldn't resist it any more.  I saw this ad for this STI, decided to buy it.

Comes with 2 pre-ban 170mm mags, which I think are 16rds.  Plus one 170mm pre-ban mag body...

Can someone tell me if I am able to LEGALLY complete the mag?

Also, anyone know of a source for pre-ban STI hicap mags?  Going rates?

Anything else that an STI expert can lend?

Thanks.

Legaly no. Do a percentage of the competition shooters build high caps from components? Probably.

So ED, are you going to torture test that one, or just run it in the 3-gun?

I will probably run it in the 3-gun.  I will bring my Dan Wesson as a backup, just in case the STI isn't fully broken in.

Further, if you limit the "gun capacity" like you did last year...the extra 7 round capacity does me no good -- huh?

Since you got those two mags with it, I will just have to let you run through the whole course with just the pistol.

Thanks......I hope it shoots as nice as it looks.

I had been wanting a custom hi-cap with night sights based on the bomar rear.....found it -- bought it.

Well it looks like you have a limited class gun with open class mags. In limited class the max lenght of the magazine is 140mm. For open class (dot sights, compensators) you can go up to 170mm aka "big sticks". If I recall correctly you should get 16 rounds of 45 in a 140mm tube. I would think in a 170mm you'd get about 19

Great gun you picked up there and not a bad price at all.  Mags are going to be the hard part on that gun with out a doubt.  There are now more STI 45 gun then there are real preban mags. Most mags you will find out there are made from tubes.  Almost every STI mag I have used had to be tuned for the gun in order to get them to run to a point that I would trust my life to.  In fact out of all the mags I own there are few that I would stake my life on.

And yes they are all real prebans.

I found last night that 170mm will indeed give you 19.

That's fine....I will likely grab some 10rd mags too...

I am still not comfortable using super hicap "big sticks" as I think it takes away from the nature of carrying and defense with a pistol.

However, if I am going to play the game, then I will play with the correct advantages.

What is the capacity for the limited classes??

There is no round count limited in limited. It's whatever you can fit in a 140mm mag. A good mag tune can get you a little more capacity, make mags drop free, and make then work more reliabily.

Game mags are usually different from self defense mags. Many game mags have to be kept super clean to run reliably. That means taking them apart and cleaning them every time you drop them on the ground (after a reload).

You can get some 140mm tubes as a "replacement" for your big sticks. As long as you reuse some parts from your big stick such as the followers you will be legal.
