Here is an STI slide stop I picked up recently.  It's supposed to be finished in black oxide, but it looks like it was painted.  Not a very impressive part.

It's a replacement part from Brownell's.

Id guess you went with the cheapest "name brand" slidestop? Usually it seems to go MIM<Investment Cast<Machined barstock.

The EGW heavy duty slide stops are nice.

For this pistol I was looking for a particular serration pattern.  Purely for aesthetics, I was trying to find something that would flow with my thumb safety and mainspring housing.  I've had Springfield, Colt, Ed Brown, Wilson, EGW, and STI.  Of these, the STI and Ed Brown were the least impressive from a quality standpoint.  The EGW was very nice, but required a good bit of fitting.  The Colt was the best drop in.

Ive never had a bad Brown Hardcore slidestop. Ive used a lot of them over the years, guess Im lucky. I will agree though the factory Colt parts used to be pretty good.

The problem I have had with the last few Browns I've had was that they were warped and did not sit flush against the frame.  The casting quality was also lacking.

Thats not the Hardcore stop. But if you do get the GI replacement parts and they are that bad the company will exchange them so long as you dont take to trying to fit them.

It is most definitely the Hardcore and the warping issue is not a new one.  I learned about it over at 1911forum.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread. I went digging and found some EB Hardcore stops. All of them have a distinct z shaped seam from the mold and none of them look that bad on the nub. Id call their CS and have it replaced.

IIRC there were some reports on the internet about a bad batch of Hardcore slidestops. I think pistolwretch even had an example with some good closeup pics.

My guess would be they came in from the vendor and got mislabeled or something.

ETA do you have any pics from the other side and top maybe?

I've got a Wilson Factory Plus slide stop and it's cast.  It's a very nice part, but will require tweaking to function properly.  I've had the Bullet Proof slide stops in the past, but I don't recall if they were cast or machined.

EGW, Wilson Combat (bullet proof), and maybe SVI, all sell slide stops that are machined from barstock.

Wilson also sell cast or min (don't know which) slide stops in the value line.

"Bullet Proof® Slide Stops are fully machined from solid bar stock with extra metal left in critical areas for added durability. "

"EGW, Inc. is proud to offer its heavy duty oversized slide stop in .201". Machined from solid 4140 and heat treated for superior strength and performance. Available in .45 and 9mm/.38 calibers. "

SVI
"Made from 416 stainless steel with a hardness of Rc42 or 4140 with a Rc44, each slide lock pin is precision manufactured from bar stock, milled to specific dimensions, then the pin diameter is micro polished for an ultra fine finish out. "

I know they recently started machining the grip safety from a piece of barstock but I havent seen anything on the thumbsafety yet.

The latest Brownells catalog. Trust me my eyes get drawn to every "New" tag next to all the 1911 parts. I'll dig out the part number. They dont list that thumb safety though.

You would think a cheap hammer strut would be a stamped or coined item.

FWIW, Smith & Wesson makes excellent MIM parts.  Their 1911 parts are dirt cheap and very very good quality.  So far, I've used the $8 hammer, the $5 slide stop, and the $12 MSH (which is fully machined).  Much better than the garbage I've gotten from Wilson Combat lately.

Yeah, you certainly wouldn't want to rely on actual user experience.  Better to wait for someone with an agenda to tell you what's best.

I doubt people like John Harrison, Chuck Rogers, Bob Rodgers, Ted Yost, Jason Burton, or Hilton Yam have much of an agenda.  I just know that most gun owners are exactly that...gun owners...that don't shoot all that much.  And I'm sorry if I'm skeptical of a $5 slide stop.

Like I said it wasnt always the case in the Bulletproof line with the thumb safety and grip safety. It looks like last spring on the thumb safety and Im pretty sure this past winter on the grip safety. Before that they were cast and Wilson didnt claim otherwise.
