Handled an SW99 at the local Gander Mountain today. I felt the trigger and it was just a lot of WTF.

I pulled down the hammer to full cocked, then pulled on the trigger. First it snapped and locked back about a half inch farther back, then a normal pull until the hammer dropped.

Are they all like that? Or did the one I handle have a bad trigger?

SW99's do not have a hammer.  They are striker fired.

Well then, I wonder what I was handling

The price tag was definately marked SW99, though, and it looked very similar to that one in your pic.

There are three different SW99's.

SW99 - This is similar to the P-99AS.  It has a long decock button.
SW990 - This is similar to the P-99DAO.  It has no decock button
SW99QA - This is similar to the P-99QA. It has a small round decock button.

The SW99 has a 4.5 to 5 pound trigger pull with a long (~0.55") trigger pull.  The first part of it (0.24") is the takeup, then the last part is actual trigger pull.  This is the "anti stress" part of it, the long trigger pull, yet a trigger pull under 5 pounds.

Every other shot will have the short (~0.31") pull.  Some people pull the trigger until they hear the click, eliminating the long part of the trigger pull.  This takes some dextarity as you have a loaded chamber and your finger near the trigger.  I do not like doing this.

If you decock the striker, then you get a long (~0.55") 8.5 to 9.0 pound trigger pull, because you are cocking the striker.

Hope this helps.

My SW99 has no hammer and it does have a decent trigger. You weren't using a sw99 if you saw a hammer.
