| I have decided to get a new SW 642 or 442. I was looking at the options @ budsgunshop.com and was saw they have a version that has no lock. What are the advantages and disadvantages to having a lock compared to no lock. Thanks guys. |

How would you remove the lock Youtube link on the procedure. This one I believe leaves the tumbler in the gun, but using the key will no longer lock it. The tumbler can be removed and someone now makes a plug for the hole. I would just try and find one without the lock, YMMV. |

I usually send my new SW revolver purchases to Karl Sokol at Chestnut Mountain Sports
He installs front night sight, smooths trigger, and replaces lock with plug. They DO lock up on occasion under recoil (light guns more often) so I will never carry one with a lock in it |

I grabbed a 642-2 that was lock equipped for a song... It took about 20 minutes to disassemble and grind the "locking portion" of the lock off leaving a key equipped plug.
Externally mine appears to have a lock... Internally... No lock. Couldn't pass it up for the price. |

I need to remove the lock from mine. If you are unfamiliar with the internals of the SW revolvers... go look on youtube, I found a few videos that made the process very clear and easy to follow when my dad wanted to remove the lock from his. Being that I was out of state, I emailed him the links and he was done within an hour. |
| I got mine at Buds for $378. I picked it up in person so no transfer fee. $378 is with shipping that was best price i found. The only pre lock they have is the 642 which is what i got. I love it so far very concealable and I just feel more comfortable with it than the Ruger LCP or SW Bodyguard i had and traded off. |

Most gun stores want about $399 for a 442 if they're on the high end, I got mine for $369. I don't think they are a weak seller as the no lock ones seem to go fast. 399 plus the tax right? Yes. A local gun store here had a 642, can't remember if it had a lock or not, on sale for $369 + tax last week. I got my 442 at a gun show, the going price seems to be $369 around here. I got mine for that minus 3% since I paid cash. |

Funny of you to post that, Knightenforcer –– I just did the exact same procedure to my 442 about an hour ago. Instead of removing the flag, though, I just grinded off the lug that prevents the hammer from cocking and re-installed it. I didn't have any particular worry about it, but I have no intention of ever using the lock, and this way I feel confident about performing the job for friends.
ETA: I found it funny (but practical) that us airweight centennials get the same lock flag as the 637s, including the never-ever-visible "LOCKED" stamp. I wonder if it's bad juju to have a part with the word "LOCKED" on it floating around inside your gun. Maybe I'll have to grind that off. |

I found a new 442 with out a lock at my local gun shop. Funny thing was they had loads of ones with the lock and only two a 642 and a 442 with out the locks. The ones with the locks were $20.00 more expensive also. The other thing that I found funny was when I asked for one with out a lock the guy behind the counter said why would you want it with no lock. I told him why andhe said he just bought one a month ago and never thought about the lock malfunctioning. |

Just got back from gun shop I'll just let my 637 w/out lock due for now. Until I run across one. Most shops could get one in for you if you want one. Im going to do some calling today! Any gun shows this weekend in your area? I've always found a better selection there than at my local gun stores. YMMV. |

Don't know I will have to look at the paper. since the move to SWF I lost my gun shop & gun smith Now I got to deal with finding a good place. The last dealer thought I was out of my mind for wanting a 642 without internal lock. he kept saying I didn't have to use the lock? I just walked out. I'm going to call a few GS in Fort Myers. bigger town. Update I found a few 642 but it was the laser grip model for over 600 bucks. I do like it |

For political reasons, I will not buy a S&W with the gun lock, and I would not remove the lock on the gun for legal reasons, since I don't trust the legal system to protect me against courtroom rhetoric if I were ever to use the "tampered" gun in a self-defense shooting.

GL I disagree, the internal lock is a lock added on (just like an external lock) it's not part of the firing mechanism of the firearm. It would not make your gun shoot in a self defense situation, it actually does the contrary when it locks up on its own. |
