Last fall I decided, after about 14 years, to get a 1911 type pistol that I could carry from the get go. I found a S&W 1911 at my local dealer and after checking it for awhile I put it on lay away. While it was on lay away I sent it back for the recall and to have nite sights installed. When I picked it up and went to the range I was very disappointed. About 70 % of the time when I would drop the slide on a new, full mag the round would start into the chamber and hang up. This was with Rem. UMC 230 FMJ, Win. USA 230 FMJ, Mag tech 230 FMJ and several yypes of JHP's. I called S&W and told them that that I had put 248 rnds downrange and my problem. I was told that I needed to put at least 1000rnd through the pistol. I went back to the range and put another 280 rnds down range and it did the same thing, and every once in while during shooting. I called S&W again and this time they said to send it in. They polished the extractor and sent it back. Same problem. Called again and sent pistol back. This time they changed the barrel, which I wished that hadn't done because it was real accurate. Another 300 rnds and same problem. Called again and this time I spoke to the man that had designed the 1911 for S&W. I sent it to him and he worked on my pistol himself. He polished the the breech face and then tweaked my trigger some so that it was real smooth. He fired 128 rnds himself and also dropped the slide 10 times each on the 4 mags that I had for the gun. No problems. I have since put 600 rnds down range with no problems. I also shot my first IPSC match every with it. I figured if it was going to malf. it would do it there. No problems. Gun did great! Shooter needs more practice! but boy did I have fun!!! I will be going again in 10 days and think I will be using my 1911 again. I think if I have a few more good range days and no problems with this next IPSC match I may have a new carry gun. With Fed. 230 Hydra shoks I can put them right on POA and approx. 1 3/4 inches. If you want a 1911 take a look at S&W. I was upset at having to send it back 4 times but it was not my only handgun and it was not for carry right away. My Glock 23hat |

I had a SW1911 that ran great out of the box. I sold it, and I regret selling it to this day. My new goal in life is to get another one. I put approx 1500 round thru it in 6 months I had it... STUPID decision to sell it and I am STILL kicking myself in the ass for doing it. But its also nice to know S&W customer service is there. |
| I bought my S+W 1911 from a buddy of mine about 6 months ago and it has operated flawlessly. I probably have put 1500 to 2000 rounds through it and it keeps getting more accurate. The problem my friend had with it was it did not lock the slide back when he was shooting, I however did'nt have that trouble. He sent it back to Smith with a letter and the gun was fixed promptly. Here in Ma it was the first 1911 You could buy new since our AG decided he did'nt like guns anymore and made it hard for many makes and models to pass the required tests. I can't say enough about it. It has treated me right. My .02 |
