The short story:
My buddies wife is looking to get him one. He sold his 25 years ago and this will be a retirement gift for him.

How much different if at all is a new one compared to one from 25 plus years ago?

New ones have the mim hammer and trigger frame mounted firing pin and internal lock. This is a deal breaker for some people not for others. Both modern smiths I had with these features were flawless and worked great but I still prefer the older style guns. With a little effort an excellent used older versions can be found for a bit less than new.
