I just picked up a used stainless steel Smith & Wesson Model 686 with 6 inch barrel from the original owner and I like it alot.
It has the original wood grips with what looks like a date stamped inside the grip.
I'm wondering if that date is the year the gun was manufactured or year the grips were manufactured? Mine says 1982.
Mine has the firing pin mounted on the hammer. Do the new'er Smith revolvers still have the F-pin on the hammer or did that change at some point?
Is there a time line somewhere listing the changes made to S&W wheel guns?
Where (online) can get general information and history of Smith & Wesson revolvers?

Thanks Much

The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson Firearms is the resource most use. Mine isn't handy at the moment or I'd give you some general info on that model. I would need the first few digits of the serial number to give you any sort of an idea on date of manufacture.

Older guns had fitted and numbered stocks. Firing pin location changed in the 90's from the hammer to inside the frame.
