What is the difference between a 642, a 638, 637 and a 442?  It says on their website that they are all avalibable in a exposed hammer, shrouded hammer, and enclosed hammer.

Also do they make a .357 snubby in an shrouded hammer?  Any why don't they offer a .38 special only in a scandium frame or titanium frame?  And have they ever offered a .38 special only in a scandium frame or titanium frame?

Any "6" prefix is normally a non-blued finish, i.e. 681, 686, 637, etc.

442 is an aluminum framed .38spl, fixed sight, hammerless.

The rest of your questions can easily be found on S&W's web site.

Good luck!!!

Which part there didn't answer your questions? They have pics & description of each model, IIRC? No slam intended, just wondering what you missed???

642-enclosed hammer/stainless barrel and cylinder, grey finish
442-same as 642 except it has blued barrel/cylinder, black finish
638-shrouded hammer
637-exposed hammer

It says on their website that they are all avalibable in a exposed hammer, shrouded hammer, and enclosed hammer.

I think what they mean is that their J-Frame .38 specials come in those options. Each option having a particular model number.

They did make a scandium/titanium .38 special only wheelgun. It was called the 342PD

The 649 is a shrouded hammer .357 magnum

I see.  This is what was not making sense.

When you clicked on each model number, in the second paragraph of the description it said they had the 3 styles but I see now that is just a generic description of their entire line.
