What is the purpose of what appears to be a round head pin just under the thumb latch on the left side on a Victory Model?.  I saw the same pin in a picture of a S&W 44 in this months issue of the American Rifleman.     TIA

That is the hammer pivot pin. In later models it is press fitted and then the frame is surface ground and polished so you cannot see the head. In the early models it was not done that way. The Victory Model has a very interestig history and is a fine old revolver in its own right IMO.

A friend bought this one at a gun show.  I'm not certain that it's original.  Nickle plated, 5 screw with the old style round front sight and in decent shape.  Thanks for the info.

If it doesn't have a "V" or "VS"(IIRC, might be SV) serial number prefix, it isn't a victory model and may be original.
