Happy weekend everyone.
My goal here is to find matching wheel guns for myself and best bud. I took him shooting last week and he fell in love with it, said he can't wait to get a gun. He's a recent college grad and I finish this coming semester, so keep in mind that we're what you would call 'poor' at the moment. I am, however, viewing this as an investment. Also, I own a 1911 purchased in '91 which still goes bang every time, and serves as my only baseline for comparison. My priorities are, in no particular order: 1. Quality=Reliability. I want this gun to last for-freaking-ever! and continue to shoot well for decades. 2. Economy. A cheaper caliber would be great, so we can afford to shoot them more often than my .45 3. Carry-option. My CCW permit is still tied up in CBI till March, but ease of carry is a consideration. I can comfortably carry my full-size 1911 but like the idea of having other options. 4. Defense. My buddy lives close to down town, and the area has had a number of break-ins and assaults. He keeps a baseball bat by the door but never wants to be 'outgunned.' Can anyone recommend specific wheel guns I should be looking at? Thanks in advance. |

Smith & Wesson has their J frame revolvers which are similar in size or smaller than the Ruger. The S&W 642 uses an alloy frame to keep weight down. I would also look for a 2.5 to 3 inch S&W Model 10/13, or SS model 64/65 which are either 38 Special (10,64) or 357 mag (64, 65). The comparable gun in Ruger would be Speed Six, or Service Six. Look at the used police guns as they can be found in good condition.
S&W and Ruger also made mid size revolvers with adjustable sights but these are normally more expensive. Look at the S&W model 19 or 66 and Ruger Security Six. |

Smith and wesson 438 would be a good place to start
heres why: Target shooting: It sounds like target shooting is imporant, hence accuracy so an exposed hammer is a must Carry: Lighter is better (generally) Cost: 38 is a pretty inexpensive round, anywhere from 14 to 20 for a box of 50. Defence: 38+P JHP is good, its just under 9mm in terms of effectiveness (look at its ballistic gel results) As for price, a new one is around 450ish but I've seen used ones in shops for as little as 350. |
