Should the extractor claw grip the rounds tight against the breech face? If it doesn't, would this cause FTExtract?

Do you have a late model Glock by chance?

Yes, the round should be held fairly tight against the breechface.  Out of spec extractors in current gen 3 and gen 4 glocks have been causing extremely erratic ejection and occasional stovepipes.  I pulled my extractor out and compared it to an older extractor.  The new extractor does not hold the round firmly against the breechface, while the old one does.

No molar, the gun is a Kel Tec Pf9. But I was asking about semi autos in general.  Coincidentally, the gun I was just comparing it to is a gen3 Glock 20sf.. Iit does hold the round tightly.
Thanks for the reply.

Not necessarily.  Some extractor designs (1911 for one) hold the round against the opposite side of the breechface.

Ken_mays If I remove my slide and place a round inside the extractor claw, it falls off freely.  I was thinking the claw should press it aginst the breech face like my glock. when you say oppisite side do you mean oppisite the extractor claw?. If so, i think you just solve my extraction problem. I tore down one of my 1911s and saw what I think you mean. There is a gap between the round and the breech face but the round stays in place because the round is presses by the extractor against the opposite side. The round does not fall off.

There may be some gunk under the extractor keeping it from coming all the way in.   Have you experienced extraction issues, or is this just a thought experiment?

This is correct.

I did have extraction problems. I called Keltec and the send me a new extractor and spring. It looks like the new extractor worked better. I've fired a bit over 200rd and no FTE yet. The reason I posted this is for one, I
'm not completely convince the new extractor completly fixed my gun. The round being so lose in there just looks odd to me. Another reason is that there are alot of guys with FTE PF9s over at KTOG. Just wanted to pick fresh minds, and hopefully help someone. Thanks Ken_mays. Are you familiar with KelTec's PF9s?

I've owned a P11 and P3AT, but not a PF9.
