I am taking a driving trip to drop off my sister in California using her car. I live in Texas. I am flying back to Texas from LA.  I want to take my handgun for personal protection, and since I'm flying back it makes things more difficult. I know I can declare it at the airport (have a lockable case (I guess that TSA can still open) and have it unloaded), BUT I have been warned by others that it may be safer (from the gun making it to the other end standpoint) to ship it back.

Any recommendations?   Use the air freight next day? Use FedEx or US Postal Service? Or would you just go ahead and check it and feel good about it making it back into my hands.

I'm not even sure you can bring it with you to CA, much less get it back with anyone but you knowing about it.

since Kalifornia is different the a majority of the US, i would find out if you bringing in that weapon will be frowned upon.

if its okay and you want to ship, i would make sure you have a dealer lined up to receive it and have a copy of his FFL to show.   you can get the box and shipping lables ready before your trip too.

one thing about shipping, would be to get insurance so if it is "lost" you can get a replacement.  UPS required you to ship handguns  next day air and its not cheap.  Im not sure about airline insurance amounts/policy regarding firearms so that would have to be investigated.

Fly with it....No issues at all as long as you play the game.

have lockable luggage with an approved tsa lock
Declare you have firearm at check in.Sign form.
Unloaded...No loaded mags included..
All ammo in the original box. outside of handgun case inside of luggage
I have been told they allow 11 pounds of ammo
But I have personally traveled with 300 rnds of .44MAG
Lockable hard case....TSA approved lock
Something else I do
inside the case I put a note with my name and cell #
It is easy to do...I do it twice a month as I travel from job site to home for the past
2 years.
If you have any questions IM.
The only issue you will have will be how it is kept when in the vehical.

EDIT...One more thing...No Hi-cap mags allowed in the state of Commiefornia
That is why I usally travle with a 1911 or revolver.

My bag did get lost once last Christmas.
I showed up at baggage claim and nothing.
Talked to an airline rep and she said it might be in,in 2 days
I notified her that there will be a firearm floating around for 2 days.
Bag was found and delivered to my hotel in 6 hours and gun unmolested

You can either fly back with it or ship it back to yourself.  No dealer required to ship it to yourself.
