I thought everyone knew this, but I have to explain it in depth with almost every transaction I do, so here we go.

A FFL may ship a handgun via USPS if they fill out form PS 1608.  An individual may not ship a handgun USPS.  An individual may ship a handgun by common carrier (UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.).  It is THE COMPANYS' POLICY that handguns ship overnight; this is a POLICY, not the law.  You can ship a handgun UPS or whatever ground for dirt cheap, compared to the other options.  I recently had a seller (private individual) from WA ship to SC (to me, I'm an 07/02) a Glock 17 in the clamshell with 2 holsters and 10 magazines.  This cost him $18 to do.  This makes it difficult for my to deal with people who claim shipping costs $50-$75 OR MORE.  If you're shipping from AK to HI, yes, it will cost some money.  But otherwise, c'mon.

TL;DR: IF YOU ARE PAYING MORE THAN 20 TO SHIP A HANDGUN YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.

This tip was provided by your friendly neighborhood arms dealer.  You may all jump in and tell me how I'm wrong now.

I'll be the first.

1. It's a USPS Form 1508, not 1608.
2. It is true that UPS/FedEx policy requires that handguns ship Next Day/Overnight......fail to abide by that policy and any claim for loss, damage or theft will be denied.
3. If you are paying more than $20 to ship a handgun you aren't following the shippers policies and probably didn't buy insurance either.
4. Stop giving nonlicensees bad advice.

Shipping a handgun by UPS or FedEx ground is like putting a cash bet equal to the value of the gun at the roulette wheel. If something happens, they will deny your claim and you will be out the gun AND the cost to refund the buyer. You're right that it's not illegal, but you're taking a possibly substantial risk. Best bet is to find a friendly FFL dealer who will ship it for you via USPS Priority Mail for a small, or no, fee. Even then you're looking at at least $25 usually.

OP   so true.   Se these guys charge 40-50 bucks for shipping when they could do something else that is some what cheaper.  But if the price is right then I will pay that extra shipping.   That is what I look for when buying, how much shipping is.
I ship via us mail.   Screw UPS or FedEx.   Just a way to get more money for no extra service.   I can pay for overnight and still takes 2 days.
I get a rifle from Shreveport and will be here in one but a pistol takes 2 because it goes through several places first while the rifle goes through one.

Are you a licensed dealer?
If not, you commit a Federal crime by mailing anything than a rifle or shotgun.
Put yourself in the sellers shoes. Does it seem wise to violate the carriers policies and risk the loss or damage to a firearm by shipping a handgun via "Ground"?

If you are paying for Overnight and it takes two days............that's on YOU. All you need to do is contact the carrier for a refund.

And most people do not have an FFL of their own so they must/should go through an FFL on their end. Why would/should I sell you a firearm still in my name?  Add it up... Ship $20 + FFL $10-30 + INS. ?    So one that can add, Would see where the $50 to ship comes in. Do some investigating before you start bashing a Private sale. I can see where it would take $50 to ship.

No FFL required to ship via common carrier, only when shipping a firearm other than a rifle or shotgun via USPS.

Why would/should I sell you a firearm still in my name? What the fuck does this mean?
