I just wanted to do a short little range report on my first Sig purchase. A few weeks ago I purchased a used P229 in 40S&W and just got a chance to shoot it yesterday for the first time. To the best of my knowledge this is a 1996 model and based on the wear and tear probably a police trade in or old duty weapon of some kind. The only changes I made were installing a short trigger and new factory grips. It has night sights, but they are a little dim because of the age.
I purchased the Sig not as a carry piece, but because I've never owned one and I've always wanted to own one in my collection. I had heard that the P229 was one of the softest shooting 40 cal pistols ever made and I didn't really believe it until I shot it yesterday. I am now a believer! lol
I shot approximately 100 rounds of 180grn FMJ 40S&W and I could have sworn I was shooting a 9mm. I was amazed at how soft the recoil really was and how fast I was able to get back on target. The stock trigger was heavy and long for the DA side and short and crisp for the SA side. Accuracy was spot on and the gun could defiantly out shoot me.lol The only issue I had was adjusting to the initial DA shot. I tend to anticipate this shot and it ends up being a throw away for me, but since I come from carrying Glocks this is something I will have to work on. There were also no malfunctions of any kind.
The only other small issue I had was adjusting to the decocker and getting my thumb on it, but again I am used to Glocks and this is something I will have to train for.
All in all I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It probably will not replace my G23 just because of the weight, but it is a real pleasure to shoot and it will always have a home in my collection right next to my 1911 and 92FS. I might even consider a P226 down the road.
