I have found that once I get used to a particular handgun, I don't consciously use the sights at shorter ranges,especially when I was shooting competitively back in the day. Do you all do this too???

no.  If I'm shooting from retention, I don't use the sights of course, but if I can get the gun into my cone of vision, I'm using the sights. Using the sights helps me hit the target For folks that don't know what "retention shooting" is, I found this lame pic on Google Image - the guy in the "shoot-me vest" is shooting from retention.
