God please don't burn the heretic.  I have searched high and low, on ARF and the web and no one makes one.

Can I build one?

Fullsize, I see Springfield Armory makes the compact version, which I would enjoy but I am after a fullsize .40 1911.  Single stack, because ParaOrdnance makes a beautiful double stacker.

If you buy a 10mm, you can change the barrel, recoil spring, magazine, and ejector.  Voila!  Instant full size .40 S&W.

If you want to leave it 10mm capable, use the 10mm ejector.  This works fine in mine, though I only use it for range purposes.  It has never failed me, but for serious social use I would want the proper ejector.

Next cute trick.  You can add a 9mm barrel, recoil spring, and magazine.  Yes, it will work.  Might require a bit of extractor tweaking, but mine didn't.  Once again, for range use, not serious social purposes.  (But, once again, I have not had any problems).

STI makes them.   Kimber and Springfield made a few, as well, but I don't think those are currently in production.

STI trojan in 40 is a fine pistol.

Thanks! I think I really need an STI this Christmas.

Leave the ejector and use 10mm mags.  Recoil spring should probably be a could pounds lighter.
Load you 40 S&W long and take advantage of the extra magazine length.

I just bought an STI Trojan in .40sw and it is nice. Locks up tight, tight frame to rail fit, nice adjustable sight/fiber front and a s&a magwell. I plan on using mine for USPSA Single Stack division and maybe even carry it some this winter after it passes all my little tests for reliability.

I haven't gotten a chance to shoot it yet as I just picked it up from my dealer yesterday afternoon but everything cycles fine and feeds fine manually...I know...I know...that doesn't mean it will shoot the same but I'm hoping it will. I'll report back tomorrow afternoon and let you know how it shoots..

That is a lot more work than you're leading to believe.  But maybe I'm missing something.  Replacing an ejector would be a PITA either way, and a new barrel could require adjustment of the bushing.

STI is one of the few companies producing 40S&W in numbers.  And they are very nice.

It could be a lot of work.  In my case, it wasn't.  Replacing an ejector isn't that bad most of the time.  My .40 S&W barrel has its own bushing.  I was lucky, and the .40 barrel did indeed drop in, though accuracy is not anything to brag about.  Good enough for gov't work, though.

Building a .40 S&W from a bare frame should be no more difficult than any other caliber.  That is certainly a valid approach.

My Trojan .40 was a smooth shooting pistol and very relaible as long as Good quality mags (Wilson, Tripp, etc..) were used.

I'm actually building a .40 right now with a Caspian frame and slide, using a ramped Kart barrel.   I can post a few photos if anyone's interested.

Why yes sir Ken, I for one, would be interested in seeing that.

This.  But don't forget Christensen Arms custom 1911's come in 40 S&W as an option too.

They're a tad bit expensive, but they're worth it!

Well just got back from the range and put 200 rounds of ammo downrange which were my reloads for my limited gun. 200 flawless rounds that is~! makes me very happy that the gun runs great out of the box and the accuracy was great as well. The sights were dead on and required no adjustment. I was able to shoot one dime sized hole with 8 rounds from about 10 yards. Trigger is pretty light and has a really short reset, shorter than my friends sa trophy match that we were also testing out, which also ran flawless.

As a note I ran the standard mag that came with the gun and a wilson 47d 45acp mag and a tripp cobra 45acp mag that both ran well in the gun. I do have system mags with 45 followers on order from tripp research but they won't be here until next week.

I would highly recommend this gun if you are wanting one in .40sw $1090 shipped with dawson fiber optic front sight and smith and alexander magwell. Just my two pennies...

First photo I took.  Seeing a 1911 in the process of a build is rather like watching sausage being made.  It's kind of an ugly thing that is probably better left unseen.

Today I got the sight cuts done and had a chance to do some function testing.   About 150 rounds of different length cartridges and a couple different bullet shapes.   All I had was a 10mm magazine, but it fed the 180 grain ball reloads without any problems.   The shorter 155 grain truncated cone reloads would sometimes nosedive on the first round, but otherwise fed them OK.   I'm betting that dedicated .40 mags will fix that problem.

I didn't have the sights on the gun before I took it to the range, so I didn't bother testing for accuracy.   Grips are some rubber Kimber ones that I pulled out of my grip box for general purpose use.

From here, I'll start working on the cosmetic touches: edge-softening, checkering, high-cut, butt-smoothing (though there is actually a pretty good bevel there already), and maybe some ball cuts on the slide.
