This is probably a dumb question but I am looking to build a commander type 1911 with a Caspian slide and frame. Is mating between the two an issue when coming from the same manufacturer? I would assume they would fit off the shelf but I'm probably wrong. Is Caspian a good brand to start with? I have not built a 1911 before so honestly have no idea where or how to start. I was hoping to find a nice guide here but a search turned up nothing. I have seen pre fitted slides/frames but they all have features I don't want (mostly front serrations ).

IIRC you can get a caspian slide/frame already fitted together
There are two long threads about home builds you can search for

Another question. It says that their slides are machined for 9mm/38 firing pins. Would additional machining be required for .45acp or do you just use a 9mm firing pin regardless of caliber? The more reading I do the more work it looks like. There has to be a guide somewhere.

you use the 9/38 FP for 45 also..it is work, but if you have the time/money/desire, get after it!

Do they charge extra for this if I order both at once?

I guess the alternative question would be if I were to purchase the desired components roughly what would a smith charge for proper assembly and fitting? I am talking about a rather standard build, no fancy trigger jobs, checkering or match grade stuff. Just a reliable shooter for plinking and possible CCW. I know it would probably be slightly cheaper to buy off the shelf but nobody makes exactly what I want.

It is something cheap like 15 bucks for Caspian to fit it for you. I said f that, and fit it myself. Probably took around 6 hours to fit it to where I liked it. I need to updated my build post i guess.

Commander either 9mm or 45acp not sure yet. Stainless, 70 series, no beaver tail, no front cocking serrations, no huge gaudy roll marks on the slide, Novak sights. A lot of it is aesthetics but hey it's my money so why not get what I want?

You are going to have a hard time finding Series 70 parts.

I think some manufacturers are building 70 series repos now as well as replacement parts for existing pistols so the parts should be out there.

op is using the term 70 series as the majorty of the population uses it, NO added safties.  Not in the tech correct 70 series as colt has made. Hell even the colt repo is not a true 70 series, but it does not stop colt from marking the slides as such.
