I have an older SA Loaded 1911 that I bought as my first 1911. When I work the action, my trigger finger rides on the off side of the Slide stop. I've noticed that it causes the slide stop to walk just far enough to cause the slide to hang up when I work the action ( the only time this has happened was with my finger riding it) . Is this normal? So far I've only put about 300 rounds through the gun and the only malfunctions were from weak mag springs. It shoots great so far.

Yep, as you push the slide stop in and pull the slide back it reaches the little cut where you pull it out (near the notch where the slide stop engages the slide) and comes out a slight bit. This cause the slide to hang up. Just keep your finger off the slide stop when you rack the slide.

Thanks for the info. It's just a habit for me. I'm just glad to know that it is my fault and not the gun.

No problem. If you don't mind, what kind of 1911 is it?

Couple things.  First, if this ever happens when it matters (in a match, in training, or worse yet, during a gun fight), the fast way to get the gun back into working order is to slap the slide stop with the heel of your left hand.  Second, there is a modification that a lot of people assume is cosmetic.  In fact, this modification is to eliminate the possibility of this type of malfunction.  The slide stop pin is flattened flush with the frame.  To ease disassembly, the slide stop pin hole is countersunk, and the edges of the slide stop pin are rounded.

Long ago we used to grind the end of the slide stop down to eliminate this problem. The current method of doing it with the counter sunk area on the frame looks much better, but until you do that you can always just grind it until it doesn't stick out so much.

I really like it. It has some honest finish wear that gives it some character. It shoots great, I think there is some extractor tension issues that I need to address. Other than that, I love the gun.

Check and adjust the extractor and use good mags and it will probably be trouble free.
I have a stainless Loaded that I use in competition. I handload LSWC bullets and as long as I check the barrel and chamber for lead after every few hundred rounds it always cycles and shoot perfectly.
Use good gun grease and oil and clean it now and then. These are not finicky pistols.
