Should inserting the slide lock take a complete stroke of luck and an act of congress at the same exact time or am I doing something wrong? I finally got it in, but it took forever....it would go in almost all the way home, and then stop about the width of a CD from going all the way in....what gives?

Oh yeah, in case you can't tell I am new to 1911's...and just got my High-Standard 1911 last Tuesday...and I already need to replace the Firing pin spring with a higher powered one to keep my firing pin from freezing inside the gun and having the stop slide on out of positon onto the ground.

Does it do it if you insert it without the bbl. and/or slide?
Is it just as difficult to remove?

It sounds to me like it's hitting on the slide stop plunger when you attempt to insert it. Take something small & push the plunger back enough to allow the slide stop to fully insert into the slot & you should be good to go, IMO.
