I have a used Taurus PT1911,  the problem I am having is the slide is holding open after every couple of shots. There is no feed issues or ejection problems. The slide stop just engages and the slide holds open. What causes this problem and what can I do to fix it?

Bad slide stop, the round is hitting the tab that the magazine catches that would normally lock it open. You could replace the part, or send it into Taurus.

Barring any additional info, I'd guess you're bumping the slide stop. (I'm assuming you're a right-hander and shooting with a two-hand grip.)  It's easy to do without even being aware of it.

Try firing left-handed for a few mags and see if the problem goes away.

If the problem doesn't happen when shooting lefty, you'll probably need to adjust your grip when shooting strong-side again.

check for copper marks on slide stop, check thumb location in relation to slide stop.
Add a dimple and/or reshape slide stop depending on issue.

Or the spring and/ or detent in the plunger tube is toast. Does your safety have a fair amount of resistance to take on off or is it really easy? Real easy suggests a new spring may help.
Barring engaging it with your hand somehow ( shoot a mag one handed left handed and this will answer the question )
Then bad slide stop is my next guess
