I have a 1911 that has issues with the slide stop, it will not always lock the slide on an empty mag,  I am using wilson 8rd mags with brand new springs/followers.  The stop appears to have been fitted (i bought the gun used) and thepin part that goes through the frame, barrel link, etc. had is deformed (looks beaten up, out of round,"peened")  also the end of the stop that faced rearward seems to have developed a detent where the slide stop plunger presses into it in the down position.

ETA: Pics

This is my theory, I am hoping someone can tell me if I am right or not.

The slide stop I have is cheap and only case hardened, the places where is has been "fitted" have taken off the hardened steel leaving softer steel that is being deformed by the cycling of the action and the pressure of the slide stop plunger. This is adding too much friction for the magazine spring to overcome and therefore leaving the slide stop down on an empty mag.  Is this a sound theory?  If so what is the best slide stop for me to get and how much fitting is actually required, finally can this, if any, fitting be done by an amateur who is good with his hands?  Thanks in advance.

Try the Greider Precision slide stop as sold by Dave Berryhill

You shouldn't have to do any fitting.

Another thing you should buy is a new recoil spring!!!

The signs of wear on the part near the barrel link tell me the gun is getting excessive abuse when firing.  That should help out too...  When buying a used 1911 it's a good idea to change out all the springs with new ones.  My Colt 1911 was showing wear like that, and it was all due to a dead recoil spring, and every shot was beating the tar out of the aluminum alloy frame, and the slide stop at the link area.

By replacing all the springs you know how many rounds have been fired through it, and can keep up with proper spring replacement intervals, etc...

Is this a fullsize or Compact? Compacts are known to eat recoil springs..

Either way, it looks like it needs a new recoil spring...

Your slide stop has been bubbaized. Wilson bulletproof would be my choice.

I vote for wilson bulletproof.

Would a bubba fit barrel cause this?

Bulletproof is my suggestion also. bbl fit, yeah chek out the lock up, and how is the fit on the link? it does look as though somebody "squeezed" things together. the advice here should do it. one other item. I have a 70 series with a screwed up bushing/slide fit. gun was used so who knows. either it was "bubba-ized" (as you say) or made in one of colts "dark" days. it works fine, but bothers me as to why it is. so I think it would`nt hurt you to look at this, bolt face, holes in frame and anything that takes a hit.

everything else looks pretty good.  I posted some more pics at m1911.org and they are being very helpfull, it seems there is some problem with the lower lugs binding on the crosspin

Sounds like greg k may have hit the nail on the head. seems i seen oversized slide stops somewhere...can`t remember...but if there is any excess, like lugs banging frame or whatever, thats an easy fix. Too short..well, you know.

Yes, IMO. I link too long or too short would cause all kinds of problems.
