I am looking at getting a small revolver. Leaning towards a Taurus 85 ultra lite. What do you guys have and like and think about this choice.

Thanks

The 85UL is a great little revolver. I have a 605 which is the same frame, but in .357. It's all steel, so not as light as the 85UL, but the tradeoff is being able to shoot .357s. I'd say shoot it first if you haven't.

Do ultra light's have more recoil? .357 has quite a bit of recoil to start with IMO.

I have shot the 605 with .38's and liked it.  I would think it would have some recoil with a .357 mag round.

I carry a stainless S&W model 60 J frame 2" .357 mag revolver when I'm not carrying my 1911.

Shooting at the range, 38's are nothing, but the .357mag kicks. I practice with both.

I was advised not to get a lightweight .357 because there would be additional recoil.

I have never shot .357 in one of the lightweight models myself to find out. I would not hesitate to get a lightweight for 38 only.

Whatever ya get, shoot it first.

What do you plan on using the revolver for? That may influence your choices.

If you want a .357 I'd go with a S&W model 19 w/2" barrel. If you want a .38 then I'd look at the S&W model 36 or the model 49 Bodyguard (shrouded hammer) if you're looking for a compact carry gun.

Actually, I think it's a 2-1/2" on the 19.

I would suggest a model 66 in a 3" barrel or a 5 shot model 60 J-frame in .357, if you don't want a .38spl for carry?

The Taurus 605M  is the best deal going if you are looking for  something small IMO. Persoanlly I don't know why anyone would concider a .38,  w/357 you have a choice of 2 caliburs, as for 357 recoil its not a factor  to me, I could shoot it all day long  with a 605M. I'm not a BIG Taurus fan but they have the best warranty hands down! To sweet'n the deal even more you get 1 yr  free nra subscription to boot.

S&W J frames are  nice if you can find a used one. But bang for the buck consider the 605.

The resale of a 38 vs 357 would be less $$ and harder to sell IMHO.
