When we run 29s on guns we run them by make, model, caliber and serial #. Import marks are not normally part of it...however, if the person reporting the gun stolen, or the LEO taking the report, or the admin person entering it put it in as a C.I.A. or Centruy Arms...(or whatever) then it could be pertinent. I do not know and have not found anything by the ATF regarding import markings or removal of them. Many in LE are not as up to speed as they should be regarding guns and could enter them in NCIC as whatever. I have gotten hits based on caliber and serial # but it was not the right gun. What I do know for sure is you can be charged for defacing a serial number.
By the way, did you ask the seller where the US made Colt came from that it has import markings on it? |

I've got an NM prefix Springfield that has CAI import marks on it. Springfield wasn't authorized to tell me who had it first.
