I had a class today and my instructor had a Sphinx SDP compact Alpha. It's the steel slide with the hybrid aluminum/polymer frame version. I see that Sphinx does an all stainless version that comes in at like 40oz. Anybody have any experience with that version or know where to get one? After shooting the alpha today I want one but may want to go all stainless since I doubt I'd ever carry it.

They also have some full size and competition models coming out which look really cool.

I got to shoot the SDP Subcompact the other day, it was a great shooter.

I handled one about a week ago, it feels even better than a SIG quality wise. Would have bought it if it was single action only.

They are pushing the SDP guns on the US market, I don't even know if you can get the other versions.

I've only ever handled or seen the SDP, at least on this importation go-around.   I think I'd rather put the money toward a CZ Tactical Sport.

The SDP Compact and subcompact models are the only ones currently imported. Full sizes are "coming", but who knows when the will actually arrive stateside. You can find some of their older full size models, but be prepared as they are even more expensive than the SDP. They are the 2000 and 3000 models FYI.

I'm thinking of getting the SDP compact alpha. That's the steel slide version with the hybrid aluminum/polymer frame. Buds and grabagun have two different part numbers though and I don't know what the difference is.

I'd say better from what I saw. Not that I'm an expert. The single action trigger is fantastic. The ergos are fantastic as well and the soft rubber grips are great. It's like a refined CZ 75 platform.

Plus the alphas are going for 900 bucks, not 1200.

I'm a HK fan, but the Sphinx wins in the quality department. I was surprised by how well it shot.

If anyone has checked one out in person it is easy to see the obvious quality. It is even more aparent when you field strip one and look at the fit and finish of the internal parts. Sphinx is know for their high end competition models. Basically they took that know how and built a defensive/duty type pistol with the quality they are know for. I assume that is why the compact was the first one imported and the subcompact followed afterwards.

I am a CZ fanboy and love them and many of the clones I've tried. I figured I would never own a Sphinx as originally they were often selling for close to MSRP. I got lucky and was able to find one used at a decent price and could not pass it up. It has been one of my favorite pistols and has gone into my carry rotation as well. The DA pull was very heavy out of the box. The SA is great as is the extremely short reset. I put a CGW spring kit in it and that solved my only issue. I recently picked up a CZ75 D Compact with a rail (basically a P01 before there was one). The weight between the two is almost identical. The Sphinx is a slight bit taller and longer than the CZ. But, the shooting comparison between the two is night and day. The SDP feels so soft when shooting it feels more like a full size gun than a compact. The trigger is very nice on the Compact D, but feels like crap compared to the SDP.

TL;DR If you have the means buy one!

My local gun shop had the Sphinx SDP. They showed it to me as I was looking at a CZ. The Sphinx is basically a clone of the CZ. Its a very well made but the price is was like 2x what a CZ cost. i get the whole Made in Switzerland but little Swiss elves thing but the cost was very high. One of my concerns is that Sphinx is a niche manufacturer and they could very easily disappear. Than what.

There is a video on Youtube where a guy compares a Sphinx and a CZ side by side. It was very enlightening as you realize the differences between them are not as great as people think. One just costs a lot more.

Sphinx Systems Ltd. has been around since 1876.  I wouldn't worry about it.

Sphinx has only been making guns since the 1980s, they have been involved with manufacturing of machine tools and stuff since 1876.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphinx_Systems

"Past Sphinx pistols were not mass-produced and were hand fitted to tight tolerances, so Sphinx pistols were more expensive than mass-produced products. In 2010 Sphinx joined KRISS Group and began production of the SDP Compact in 2012. The SPD Compact is Sphinx's first mass-produced firearm, which lowered the price by over 66%; partly due to Sphinx earning their ISO certification in 2013. Initial reviews have been very positive and the Sphinx SDP Compact has been featured in Combat Handguns, Recoil (which found it to be 25% more accurate than a full size CZ SP-01), and more."

I am not saying they are bad by any means. I think they are extremely well made. Its a niche gun that is a clone of a CZ. Sure its better made but its not twice as better made. Watch the video on Youtube where the guy compares them.

Maybe not to you.

That's a question the market and individual consumers will decide.

Much better.  HK is consumer grade mass production.  Sphinx is in another class.  I'm holding out for a full size now that prices on Sig X5 have gone exponential.  HK is good quality though. Better than competition, but nothing remarkable.

Very true, but importation of parts becomes more difficult every year due to domestic law changes in both countries, plus international regulations.  To your point, I can get parts for some of my oddball walthers without much effort, but those specialty importers have been around for four decades.  Sphinx has been off and on for maybe 25-30 years in the USA I think. First saw them show up in the late 80's I think.

I'm kind of holding out for the production model at this point. The DA and SA pulls are basically halved. They advertise the SA at 3lbs. Wonder if it has a shorter reset or anything too.

I had wanted a Sphinx pistol back when they were like 3K and never bought one because they were like 3K.  Now they have the SDP I want a full size when it comes out because it is not like 3K but looks like it will be under 1K.
