I was at the range the other day shooting my home brew 1911 government style pistol, and I think my recoil spring has had it. Granted I picked up a box of +P TMJ but I feel like my 1911 was being punished. Took her apart and found no evidence of battering, but while shooting I did feel the recoil.  I looked in my parts box and found a Wolf extra power spring that I think is either 18 or 20 lbs and it feels a little heavy. What weight of recoil spring do you guys run in your 1911 governments?

I run a #16. I usually shoot fairly light reloads and standard pressure factory. No battering in my Springfield loaded. Having a super heavy spring just seems like asking for function problems.

I generally only shoot standard 230 gr ball out of this pistol and was going to order a 16 lb spring. I shot this pistol a few weeks before this last range session and all seemed well. I guess the +P ammo TKOed my recoil spring in short order. Thks.

I shoot #18, everything from light to +P, never had a problem.

I run 18.5lb recoil springs.

I run 18-18.5 in all Government length 1911s. Never had a single problem in 8 different models so far. I use 230gr. ball and HP ammo only though since any other weight just feels wrong..

10 to 18.5 depending on cal and reload juice.
