After my range visit yesterday, I held/fondled/drooled over a Springfield Range Officer model at the gun shop there. Very good fits, excellent finish, great trigger. About $850 (maybe it was more but definitely under $900) at this store which is a very pricey place IMHO.
If it came with a standard fixed type combat rear sight, and a lower price to match the simpler sight, I might think about selling some of my plastic guns to get one. Do they make one with a fixed/combat rear sight? I've looked over the Springfield web sight and can't seem to find anything like that. |

That thing is cut in the manner of the old Bomar target sights. I don't think adding a fixed sight will work, or look very good on it.
And besides, the whole idea is not to pay extra for the target sight in the first place, much less add the cost of yet another one to replace it. |

They introduced it as an entry level competition gun. You're not the only one that wants a fixed sight variation of it, nor the only one that thinks the Harrison replacement sight looks like sh*t. If they would drop the adjustable rear sight, I'd buy one as well. It's the PERFECT blank slate for some simple modifications and already has very good slide/frame/barrel/bushing fitting. |

Harrison rear sight
The Harrison rear sight for Springfield 1911s is a little clunky looking, but it's pretty popular and apparently a lot of the Range Officer owners have made the swap. |

The RO utilizes the LPA sight cut. Though visually similar, it is NOT the same as a bomar cut. If you buy a bomar cut rear sight, it will not fit. I''ve carried my RO around quite a bit, and contrary to popular belief it is not fashioned out of razor blades, and so far I've survived the experience intact. The adjustables in the rear have been quite handy for (what they were designed and placed there for) zeroing with different loads at different ranges, and I'm liking them pretty well. The only thing I did was replace the front sight with a trijicon night sight, but now I wish I'd put in a fiber optic job in there instead. It's been a great gun, one of my favs. |

The rear sight blade can cut you during a malfunction. If I cared I would pull out the dremel and start rounding some of the edges. My changes to date. Grips (VZ tan G10 Diamond Backs) and slotted screws. I would like to add a magwell (S&A) and soften the edges on the saftey. |

Like others have said, I don't believe you can get it stock, but that won't stop you from changing it out. However, have you compared it to S&W's E-series? I put an E next to a nice SA RO the other day and was hard pressed to choose one over the other, and at the shop I usually use, they were within $50 of each other, around the $850ish. Just a thought, IMHO, but I really like them both. |

A fixed rear does not fit in what the RO was put on the market for. While certainly true, they're missing thousands of potential customers by not offering a fixed sight version. It would be the perfect base-model carry pistol with a fixed rear. I think it would fit nicely in the spot between the Mil-Spec and the Loaded. Matter of fact, I'd sell one of my Loaded's to buy one. When I talked to the springfield reps, they stated that the RO was the entry comp gun and if you wanted fixed, you should get the loaded model. Yeah, they probably figure the niche between the Mil-spec and Loaded is too close to dump another model in there. Kinda sucks because after owning 2 Loaded's for a few years, my tastes have refined to where a slightly modified RO with fixed sight would be just right. Looks like I'll just have to go with the Harrison sight if I ever get around to getting one. Problem is (for Springfield anyways), I'll put that purchase off for quite a while.
