I own a Springfield Armory 1911NM 9mm and have been trying to find that magic combination to shoot accurate groups at 50 yards. My first goal is to get the pistol to shoot sub 2 1/2" groups at 25 yards and work from there.
The pistol is the NM model and it won't shoot any better than 4" at 25 yards with factory 124g FMJ and 115 FMJ rounds. My reloads haven't shot any better than 4 1/2" . I have tried 147g FN lead bullets, 125g lead RN bullets, Unique powder and Accurate Arms # 2 powder so far. Anyone shoot bullseye competition that has a recipe for a good target load for the pistol and is willing to share it with me? If I were some of you reading this post, I would suspect the shooter is the primary reason my loads are not shooting well enough to be competitive. If I am having a good day at the range, it is not unusual for me to shoot at least one offhand 10 shot 2 1/2" group at 50 yards with my S&W 586 using my reloads. I would like to eventually be able to shoot a 10 shot sub 4" group with the 1911NM. |
| I don't have a single auto gun that will do 2 1/2" at 50 yards. That includes a SA 9mm 1911, a 9mm 6" STI Targetmaster 1911, and two 5" SW PPC 9mms. I shoot PPC with several high masters, and I have never seen any of them shoot a 2 1/2" group at 50 yards with an auto gun. Good luck. |

The barrel bushing fits very tight. The barrel link appears to be well fit.
I want to eventually shoot a sub 4" group at 50 yards; a 2 1/2' group would be unrealistic for me or the gun. A sub 4" group must be possible. I witnessed a 50 yard 2" group shot by an accomplished shooter using an extremely modified Beretta 92 DAO semi-automatic. You would have had to see it yourself to believe it. He would have taken the whole match, but the sun moved and he did not make a sight adjustment to compensate for the change in the light from early morning to mid afternoon. He shot a 720/720, but he got out X'd. I would have been tickled with his score. The highest score I was ever able to shoot was 718/720-31 X. |
| Most Shueumann AET barrels are guarenteed to shoot 1.5" at 50 yards, SO this is not unheard of for a semi auto handgun. I believe alot of les baer's come with a accuracy guarentee also. My match load for my Kimber 9mm is Bear creek 147 grain bullet with 3.5 grains of solo 1000 . This load has proved to be incredibly accurate in the Kimber, Xd, and Beretta 92. |

Thanks Waxman ! This is the kind of information I was looking for when I started this thread. What is the C.O.L. of your load?
Update 04/27/10- I lengthened the OAL of the loaded cartridge and I am starting to see improvement. I used Unique powder with 147g lead bullets. I had a few fliers that opened up the group to 3 1/2", but 15 out of 20 rounds grouped just under 2" at 25 yards. |

I have a Springfield 1911 chambered in 9x19mm, and I routinely shoot slow fire offhand 10-shot groups at 25 yards which I can cover with a half dollar. I haven't fired mine at 50 yards yet...
ETA: now I've fired it at 50, 60, 75 and 100 yards, and I was consistently knocking down the narrow steel popper plate. |
