Good morning,

I held one of these guns the other day in my local shop, and was immediately impressed by how well it felt in my hand.

I have never considered a 1911 for a 9mm before, but I would like to get the EMP or something similar. I already own a Springfield GI 1911 that is my favorite handgun to shoot. Never a problem with it, and I shoot it very well despite the parkerized low profile gi sights.

Right now with 3 small children and not a great deal of disposable income the $1200 price tag on the EMP is steep for me. Is there a comparable gun out there for less? My local guy says that Springfield built this gun from the ground up for the 9 and 40. It's not just a full sized 1911 with a modified mag and barrel. For me this gun would be perfect for concealed carry, or in the car, or on my person while hunting.

Looking for experiences from folks who own one or something comparable. Plus for recommendations on what to buy. If nothing less expensive is available I guess I'll just have to save.

Thanks!

If you're just looking for a compact & THIN 9mm there are other choices:

the Keltecs which are about 70% cheaper than the EMP

PF-9

P-11

and the Kahr PM9 which is about 50% cheaper than the EMP

PM9

but you want a compact 9mm in the 1911 platform than I think the EMP is your only choice.

If it is any help, you should be able to knock a couple hundred dollars off of that price if you shop hard and have a friendly FFL. Buds had EMPs listed earlier in the week for around $1030 delivered and you might even find one a bit cheaper if you look long enough.

My brother-in-law has one and loves it. I believe he paid just over $900 for it last year. It is very accurate and reliable. However, there are a couple of quirks to it. First, the mags from Springfield are expensive. Second, it is a picky eater. They do not recommend reloads for it and the reason is that the cases must be sized the entire cartridge. If you get one in the chamber that is not correctly sized, and drop the slide on it, the slide will lock close and you will not be able to open it except by using a bar thru the barrel on a live round!!! So just use quality factory ammo like recommended and you will be fine. I also did not like it because it had a ambi safety on it and that makes it a bit harder to conceal. The parts are not standard 1911, so you just can't swap them out. The other reason I did not like it was I just like alloy framed guns. That is just me, he loves it.

The EMP shoots great and they are great guns, but I understand your feeling on the price tag.

You might look into a Kahr MK9 or PM9 for something small and concealable. There are several of each for sale on the EE. They are definately more cost effective BUT they are not a 1911...
