I was seriously eyeballing the Champion Operator, but now I see they have a GI version that is significantly cheaper due to the lack of bells-n-whistles.

I checked SA's website and don't see this model.  It appears the Mil-Spec is the closest thing, but it only comes in a 5" model.  Is the Champion GI a discontinued variant?  Everywhere I look that carries it, has it listed as "Out of stock".

Anyone know where to get one online?  Any owners care to share their thoughts in this specific model?

I have a Lightwieght GI Champ I picked up a few months ago. Love it. $899 is way too much, check with Buds or Jet Guns. I paid $575 out the door. Had SA do some little things to it, did the trigger, hammer, msh and grip safety myself.

As long as whatever you buy doesnt have the standard wwII GI sights I would say go for it.

Damn.  Buds still has the Champion Operator in stock for $814 shipped, and it comes with all the goodies.

I emailed my go-to dealer and one of his suppliers has the GI model for $449.  Add in the his fees, and I'm probably looking at right around $500 out the door.  Problem is, just like everyone else.......it's not in stock.  I guess that guy on Gunbroker knows these things are hard to come by, judging by his price.

How much does SA charge to swap the sights?

I had no idea what the going price was on these. Not a model I'm very knowledgeable about.

Yeah.  It's a discontinued model, as far as I can tell.

gi champion lists around 520.  loaded champion around 800 and there a champion operator for 860.  all provide different options and the operators have a rail.

I made a new rule for myself that might help others in picking out a 1911. Don't by anymore 1911s that don't have dovetailed front and rear sights.

+1 I've got an older model "Loaded" that has the staked front sight and it caused issues. (Shot low)

Sent it in to SA and while they had it, had them refinish the blued to black armory kote. Also got a new SS barrel and bushing (no cost) out of the deal

Hoping that this makes me happy but have been looking at other 1911's lately. So many pistols...so little money

+2 to the dovetailed sights.

OP, I had a GI Champion, and while I love 1911s and want another one, I just could not get along with the lack of refinements.  I guess I am a spoiled millennial and not a man with my XDm's good sights and somewhat ambi controls (I'm a lefty) but I vastly prefer them over the WWII sights and brass in the face every other round thanks to a high ejection port on that GI model champion.  Do yourself a favor and at least buy the loaded model.  Better yet, get the government loaded model.  It was really weird having a 4" 1911 combined with a bull barrel and a captured spring guide rod even though I've never actually owned a government model 1911 before.

I had an older model GI champion with the standard bushing and plug. Awesome gun, selling it was the single worst gun selling decision I ever made.

I bought one NIB for $500 less than 2 years ago.

Here's one for less than that:

http://www.migunowners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=158708

I found that using River of guns:

http://www.riverofguns.com/cb/index.pl?s=CHAMPION

I had the sight cuts done locally on the Champion and that 'smith botched it:

I sent it to Ray Parga to unfuck and it came back looking like this:

I went with the C&S 4.5 lb trigger kit, Wilson extractor and 10-8 flat trigger.

They are out of stock because SA is not shipping them anymore.  So whatever your dealers are telling you they can get them for, they can't.  My dealer said he couldn't understand why they would stop selling THE ONE gun he could never keep in stock because they sold so fast.

I understand the GI models have been discontinued, but when I email my FFL for a quote, he forwards the email he gets from his distributors.  It said they had a handful in stock.  Must have been leftovers.

No, he gave me a refund and sent me a letter acknowledging he mangled it some time after the fact.

I learned a valuable lesson regardless.

I have been thinking about getting mine worked over... If they are discontinued, maybe I should leave it original.
