Hello all,
I have had a Springfield GI for approx. 5 years but I want to mod it up a little. When I buy parts do I need Series 70 or 80? I do not know the difference. 1st the sights have to go, can anyone recomend a good aftermarket set of drift in rear stake on front sights? They don't have to be night sights, just taller and wider than what is there currently. any companies out there making replacement sets for what I have now? ETA: Narrow tenon or Wide tenon? Is there a brand that will fit the rear dovetail that doesn't require machining? NM 2nd I would like to add a beaver tail grip safety and new hammer, extended thumb safety and slide stop. (This is where I dont know if I need Series 70 or 80 parts) I know a few 1911 smiths that can do the work but I may search around here and see if I can find a few DIY guides and do it myself. If anyone has links to somthing like this, feel free to post them. Oh and feel free to post pics of your upgraded GI's if this is something you've done. Thanks, lrc |

Hello all, I have had a Springfield GI for approx. 5 years but I want to mod it up a little. When I buy parts do I need Series 70 or 80? I do not know the difference. (Series 70 .... 80 has a firing pin safety) 1st the sights have to go, can anyone recomend a good aftermarket set of drift in rear stake on front sights? They don't have to be night sights, just taller and wider than what is there currently. My recommendations would be have someone cut you a dovetail (novak cut) so you can use good sights 2nd I would like to add a beaver tail grip safety and new hammer, extended thumb safety and slide stop. (This is where I dont know if I need Series 70 or 80 parts) Beaver tail grip safety will require fitting on your pistol, new hammer will have to be fitted to your sear, the thumb safety will have to be fitted and also the slide stop will just drop in. I do not know how proficent you are with building a 1911 but some of this will require special tools. I know a few 1911 smiths that can do the work but I may search around here and see if I can find a few DIY guides and do it myself. If anyone has links to somthing like this, feel free to post them. | I don't know how much money you're looking to spend, but Smith & Alexander makes a grip safety and fitting jig for SA tangs. I've used several, and I wouldn't use anything else. Since you will need to swap out the hammer, take a look at Cylinder & Slide fire control groups. It's been awhile since I've purchased one, but you get a sear, disconnector and hammer for a reasonable price, and in my experience they are drop in parts (which are almost non-existent on 1911's). Again, I won't use anything other than C&S for these parts. Plus, C&S parts give a good trigger pull just by installing the parts. |
