Picked up a GI mil-spec this morning and she is a beut.  Any suggestions on grips?  That would be the only thing I think I would change.  That and the MSH internal lock with a replacement arched MSH.

I'd swap out the grips screws for slotted ones and add some vz grips.

I'd change more than your asking, as a bone stock gi is not my cup of tea.

It depends on what you want.  If you are trying to make it look like a USGI 1911, then replace the grips and grip screws with USGI items.  If you want to go farther, replace the thumb safety and mainspring housing with USGI units.  There are some threads on www.1911forum.com about making Springfield GIs look as authentic as possible.

ETA - I initially missed the Mil Spec part.  Just put any grips you want on it and shoot the hell out of it.  Make the cosmetic mods if you want it to look a little more "authentic" but the Mil Spec isn't a 1911A1 clone.

I have never had a bone stock 1911 and have always wanted one with a spur hammer and duck bill GS but the sights leave little to be desired.  It had slotted grip screws this morning but SA marred up one of them when screwing it on.  Luckily I had Wilson hex head screws laying around.  I might find some original GI grips and call it a day.  Don't get me wrong 1911's with skeletonized hammers and enhanced beavertails etc are nice but bone stock 1911's IMO make me think of what our boys had back 100 years ago hence why I bought one.

All Springfields are what you call 70 series.

Colt, para, Sig, Rem, use a 80 series saftey (Colt and Kimber can be bought both ways on only a few models)
Kimber uses and old Colt design called the swartz.

All SA are what people call 70 series, not tech correct, as a 70 series Colt  had a different type of barrel bushing a finger one iirc. Tech no such thing as a 70 series Commander.

you appear to have a Mil-Spec (angled serrations, lowered and flared ejection port, taller, better sights and more) and not a G.I. model but at one time, Springfield DID call one of their pistols a Mil-Spec G.I.

There is one thing on the frame that would get a gunsmiths attention.

Grips?  For carry I like the good old fashioned black Colt rubber grips.  Had them on my Commander for many years.

That is a Mil-Spec model.

Shoot it.

This started out as a G.I. model

I built it up to play USPSA/IPSC Lim-10 division in the mid-1990's

Ya, really! Now what?

This one shows some good wear but it's still nice & tight. Not a fan of short triggers, aside from that I'm thinking a refinish and maybe a nice new match barrel & bushing from SACS.

SAI doesn't believe in the Series 80- or Swartz-style safeties.

They do use a 38 Super firing pin, though.

That's a damn nice looking weapon.  It looks like it has stories.
