I am looking to get my first 1911 and have narrowed it down to the above mentioned models. Mainly for cost reasons. I want to spend less than $700. I'm sure I can find something better used. But if I am going to go with one of these, which is better choice and why?

Hopefully you can find a Mil-spec so you'll have the option in the first place ... anyways, if you're going to go all out and replace stuff for a custom build, might as well get a GI and save the money initially. If it will remain mostly stock, I would go for the Mil-spec simply due to better sights and the bevelled magwell. The GI would be the closest to a M1911A1 in the Springfield lineup, and the vertical slide serrations sure look nice.

I imagine it would remain stock. I typically keep my guns that way, but I'm new to 1911's, so maybe I won't always be that way. I have been leaning toward the Springfield Armory 1911-A1 MIL-SPEC with 5" barrel Parkerized finish. I gather fromwhat you are saying that they are hard to find though?

Also recommend the Mil-Spec as it has the mods over the G.I. that are most important––usable sights, opened and beveled ejection port, throated barrel ramp.  They are are to find, currently for reasons unknown.  These guys SGC currently have a stainless milspec in stock for $649.

I'd get the Mil-Spec if I were in the market right now.

This.

ETA - The milspec also has the flared and lowered ejection port, GI does not

Either one are good. If you are not planning on a “Full Build” or anything along those lines, and mostly keeping stock, then the Mil-Spec would be my choice. It comes with more user friendly features and very decent part(s) quality.

If you're gonna customize it, it all boils down to whether you like straight or slanted cocking serrations.

Go with the Mil spec iis definately more shooter friendly: lowerd and flared ejection port, high ramp sights, throated barrel, etc its defiantely worth it.

I picked up a mil spec today. My buddy and I got the last two they had. Went straight to the range. I love this gun.

I'd cough up a little more coin for the loaded personally. MC operator FTW.

I tell everyone who is about to buy a 1911 to wait save some money up and get a mid priced 1911... if you absolutely have to have one of those I would go with the mil-spec. But my overarching advice would be to save some more money and get like an operator… your talking 200 more bucks… that’s not that much for a big difference in performance.

Iown both the standard 1911 and the mil spec both are good guns but if i was buying new i would buy the mil spec.

Beware of lowering and flaring the ejection port of the GI model.  The Rollmark is centered on the standard ejection port.  Once lowered, the top of the ejection port will sit right on top of the "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" rollmark –– it will look like you did something unnatural to it.  You'll notice on the Milspec that the Rollmark is centered properly with the lowered ejection port.

Cheers,

Jack

I recently went through the same decision.   After I decided to go with the Milspec, my next choice was parkerized or stainless?

I went with the parked, but now kind of wished I had went with the stainless, lol
