Hi, I'm a newbie to the 1911's but have always liked them. My cousin just recently got a springfield GI parkerized model. Its a nice gun for the money and he has run probably 600 rounds through it with out a problem. I'd like to pick me up a good 1911 and I've seen Springfield has basically the same gun but a high capacity model and they're only about $30 more than the standard. Does anyone have any experience with these? I like the 1911 but I could see a use for a few more rounds in the mag. Its mainly going to be for plinking and home defense. My buddy who works at a gun store says that the high capacity 1911's are big and bulky but he's only about 5'5" with little hands. Are there any other downsides besides the size? I'm going to try to get my hands on one before I buy one.

I have a Springfield Armory 1911 GI High Capacity.  Its heavy when fully loaded but other than that its a not that bad.  Not that much wider than many other non-1911 .45's.  To me, it feels about the same width as my glock or beretta, but it is much more confortable "shootable" in my hand.
The only downside for the particular model that i have is the crude sights, still damn accurate though.

I had 2 frames crack on me. IMHOP not worth it. the SA HC can not take a steady diet of 230 for USPSA shooting.

I'd get an STI HC or a std single stack 1911.

Approximately how many rounds did it take for each frame?

If I wanted a handgun with a double-stack magazine, I would not get a 1911.

I love 1911s, but they were meant to be SINGLE STACK GUNS!

That's all there is to it.

Guess you never tired STI.  the Grip frame is about the same as a 1911 with std wood grips, and they run.

On the cracking frame onewas around 4k the other was less than 2k.  I sold the gun when I got it back after the second frame crack.
