I received a Springfield RO as a gift- never have owned a 1911 before. I would like to get 2-3 more mags for it. This will not be a carry gun for me.

Where do I start looking? What recommendations do you gentlemen have?

This may be a stupid question but are all 1911 mags interchangeable? (never owned one before, and all I have are the 2 mags it came with)

Yes, they  should be interchangeable.

There are a ton of quality mags out there, and there a ton of cheap mags out there too that may or may not work.

I just did a quick check, Colt factory mags seem to the most reasonably priced. I'm not sure if you are going to find cheap surplus mags out there anymore maybe someone will be along to give you more info.

My recommendation would be 7 round Colt factory mags.  They are relatively inexpensive and function very well across a wider spectrum of guns.  Some 1911's can be mag sensitive and the Colt mags mitigate some of this.

Thanks for the input guys. I found some colt mags online but also see a bunch of Chip McCormack mags that offer one more round with 8 rounds, will these work?

I've used Chip McCormick Power Mags for years and only had issues with one gun.  It was a Springfield Milspec.  They have worked fine in various other Colts, Kimbers, and Springfields to include my Springfield Range Officer.  If you're ok with spending a few more bucks, the McCormicks should serve you well.

Yeah I am completely cool with spending a few bucks more. Only plan on buying 2 more mags, this gun is going to be a plinker, and looking a 45 prices, a special occasion plinker at that.

Wilson Combat makes great 1911 mags. The Chip McCormack 10rd Power mags are pretty nice too.

Although several brands are interchangeable, make sure you are getting the correct size.  The two or more lengths can look very similar in the packaging.  Especially when you start taking into account bumpers and stuff.

Plinker only, use the coupon in the box and get some more SA mags.

or pick up some
Wilson, Tripp, Chip, Meatlform.

I used the coupon that came with my RO and ordered 3 stock mags.  I find nothing wrong with stock mags, they work just fine.

I recently purchased a new Milspec and new Range Officer and two of the four factory mags that came with the guns do this when you push down on the follower.  One of these mags caused a failure to feed on the first round fired out of the Milspec.  I switched to CMC Power Mags and had no further problems.

The follower is probably sticking on the mag release cut-out on the mag body.

A lot of magazine followers stick when you push down on them with your finger.  That is why you never check magazines that way.  It means absolutely nothing, except that you have tilted the follower, therefore, it no longer "fits" in the space it was designed to move up and down in.  Rounds push them down evenly.

Except that the first round out of the mag caused a failure to feed because the column of rounds didn't push up.

For the 1911 I would recommend the following magazines.

Wilson, Chip McCormick............ Then factory Colt.
