I've been offered a Springfield TRP in stainless for a very good deal. I'd REALLY like to pick up a TRP, and this one is a good deal but it's in stainless, and I've never really liked the looks of stainless 1911's. So I was wondering, could a stainless TRP be professionaly coated, and would it be durable? Or would it flake or come off, and I would just regret it later? I can't decide what to do. My gut is telling me to pass on it, but I thought if it could be "re-colored" somehow, at a relatively low cost, it could still be a good deal.

I have a Kimber stainless and also don't like the look of stainless. I asked around before I bought it to make sure I could get it refinished in black at a later date. Someone recommended Melonite QPQ coating from Coal Creek Armory. I've been poor of late so I haven't done it, but maybe someone else has given it a try and would like to comment. www.coalcreekarmory.com/custom_finishing.html x156 |

Keep in mind that a GOOD refinishing job can easily cost you a few hundred bucks, so that TRP better be CHEAP. Not a 1911, but I had a S&W 686 finished with 'Diamand Kote'. It held up OK, with no chipping, but there was definite wear on the cylinder, which kind of looked grubby after just 2k rounds or so. No more refinishing for me; it was quite a bit of money for not much return. I'll hunt down an old blued revolver the next time I get bored of stainless ones... (ETA: It obviously CAN be done, and done well; M&Ps and other pistols now have stainless slides with some sort of finish, but doing a good aftermarket job is going to cost...) |

Drakes Gun Works does Melonite which can be applied to Stainless and would be my preference. The average cost is $175 plus return shipping |
