I'm comparing these two models. Am I correct that an MC Operator is essentially a Loaded model with a rail? I am aware that there are differences between the two models including front strap checkering, mag well, and perhaps weight of trigger pull. Here are my questions...
1. Are the guts the same quality? 2. Is the TRP more refined in its fitting, and thus perhaps more accurate and maybe reliable? 3. I handled a couple of TRP's and the front strap checkering felt like a meat tenderizer to me. Are they all that way? It just seemed very aggressive to me, and I do not shoot with gloves. As a TRP owner, how have you addressed this concern if any? Or do I just need to quit acting like a girl about it?
If they're similar quality, I'm almost leaning toward a Loaded with a NM prefix because I just don't have to have a rail. What say the hive? |
| My .02. I have shot my brother's Armory coated TRP and bunch and didn't mind the coated checkering(the stainless ones are vicious). Given my dislike for the TRP/Tactical marks in addition the the FLGR, when it came time to throw down my money, I went with the MC Operator and have been very happy. The only down side I see with the MC is the glued in extractor but, mine hasn't been a problem. If I send it back for any work that will be the first thing to be improved. |
| I own and shoot both the Mc operator and a Trp. Both guns shoot great, however my mc operator is more tightly fitted than my TRP. Having said that both pistols shoot very tight groups ( basically identical). I know some are put off by the front strap checkering of the Trp but I have never been bothered by it. Even after 3 day pistol classes the checkering is a non issue, if anything the positive grip provided by the checkering enhances pistol control. |

I have an older Armory coated TRP that I have shot several thousand rounds thru and I don't notice the front strap checkering when shooting. The checkering a common concern with a lot of people that I have talked to about and it's usually the first thing people comment on when they pick one up. I just bought a MC Operator and I have been very pleased with it so far. Both pistols are equally accurate in my hands and I have not had any reliability problems with either pistol. I bought the MC Operator because it had a light rail and it is my "nightstand" pistol.
I actually don't care too much for front strap checkering and none of my other 1911s have any front strap treatment. I prefer a smooth front strap and I have never had any problem holding on to any of my pistols. If I had to choose between the TRP and the MC Operator now and I could only have one, I would pick the MC over the TRP just because of the front strap checkering. I carry my 1911s and the checkering can tear up your belt, clothing ,etc. and hang up on an outer garment when drawing the pistol. |

My information might be a bit dated, but as I understand it, the TRPs are produced through the SA Custom Shop, hence the PC model prefix as opposed to the PX prefix of the regular production guns. The guts should all be the same, but with the advantage of better attention to detail.
As for the 20 LPI checkering, you'll get used to it. That's what calluses are for. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Nope, not the case. US made guns are made via their US assembly line. SA does have various "tiers" of MIM and the higher end models get better stuff. The C and X either reference the duty kit, etc or they also used to differentiate CA approved vs not (CA model only applies to model # sent in so they've kept it same) |

The ones I handled were stainless, and this was my exact thought. I can see that coated checkering would be more forgiving, and I hadn't considered that there'd be a difference. I need to go handle coated model. The SS felt like a self-torture device. |

I wanted to check before but my memory was correct. The TRP I used to own had a glued ejector. Shouldn't matter they even did it for a short time on the Professional. If Dave Williams is ok doing it on the Pro I'd say it's a non issue. |
I'd get what you can find. I have both but it took years to get them. Every time I would find an mc operator I would second guess it and end up getting something else. I finally got one last week and I'm glad I did. I walked into a local shop and saw a non railed trp and couldn't get my money out fast enough. After that I had to have the railed version so I searched around and heard through the grapevine that gun gallery in Jacksonville had one coming in. I paid them for it before it was even delivered . I love all 3 of them. Now I just need a full custom 1911. |
