I just was looking at Springfield's site and saw their "ported" line of pistols. Do the ports add to the decibel level of the gun (from the shooter's perspective) like muzzle brakes on a rifle. I'm thinking about this from a CCW standpoint, I wouldn't want to carry something that could deafen me if I actually had to use it. |
| No, there is no sound difference, but in a real low light situation the muzzle flash is a little bright. If you shot it in total darkness it could temporarily mess up your eyes, however you shouldn't ever be shooting in zero light. LOL They don't let you use ported barrels in the IDPA matches for this reason, but it isn't as serious as most people make it out to be. |

(Condescending opinionated facts) not sure about the db dif in the two, but when you need to shoot to defend yourself you might need to shoot holding the pistol from the hip to the rib area. Ports will just blow that gas in your faceā¦you can be def and shot alright, but not blind. Ports have a place in tactical and law enforcement uses, but not so much concealed carry...get the sub-compact and dont look back, great carry gun. It will accept Beretta mags you know; they should call it the sub-backup (for our boys in Sandghanistan who have been issued M9s) (Condescending opinionated facts) |

I have a ported XD9 and it is a great firearm. Yes, the front sight will be blackened after a box of ammo, but I'm using them as plain iron sights and not looking for the dots. The dots help in low light and I seriously doubt I'll be in a low light defensive situation in which I have to expend over 50 rnds. The recoil with the ports is minimal to none, but the gun is a bit louder. As far as muzzle flash, any gun will flash, such as revolvers even. It will depend on your ammo. |

If you're considering this for CCW use, you may want to do some research. Ported guns are somewhat louder which is not necessarily a personal protection drawback is. I will say however this is a considerably increased muzzle flash which is not favorable in a personal defense situation. The fouling of the front sight should be of concern. I know people who carry "white out" to redo their front sight. Do a search on hs2000.com. This subject has been well documented over there. I carry an XD SC with Truglo day nite sights. I love it. DING DING DING!!! We have a winner!!! There be the real downside. I have a Taurus 945 that's ported, and after 10 rounds the front sight dot is black, totally gone. Real PITA. Now, in a defensive situation, that's probably not a huge deal. The first shots will be the important ones, but at the range I have to continually wipe that sucker off. |
| Ihave shot the XD40 that was ported. There was a big difference. in how the gun shot. The porting on the 40 cal really calmed down the flip. The proting on the 9mm is a waste of money. The reason why porting on a 40 works so well is that this round is working under extrem pressure. The 9mm is reletively small compaied to the 40. I ported my beretta that is in 9mm and did not see a big difference. All of my guns are range queens and I do not care how dirtly the front site gets. |
I agree completely. Ported guns are NOT for CCW. Don't be lured into one. |
