I have a Springfield 5" (not sure of model) and really like it. I want to get a 4", and cant decide between a Champion Loaded or a Kimber Crimson Carry.  I want a laser grip on it.

Discuss, please post a price for each.  I think both are around $1k.

ETA:  neither seem to come with a mag-well.  I suppose i could put a bolt on from Wilson Combat on it...

Why do you want laser grips?  They are pretty pointless if you ask me, other than as a training tool.

If the SA is $1000 without the grips and the Kimber is $1000 with the grips, them the Kimber is really $800 cause the grips cost somthing.  Personally, I'd get looking at the Pro Carry in the Kimber line over the Crimson carry.

Either will work fine, but this is ARF.com...get both.

Personaly I would go springfield. I'm not a fan of the firing pin block but that's just me. If they are the same or even close to the same price I would say go springfield first then go kimber....either way like the guy above me said....get both you can never have too many 1911's :-)

I'd say Springfield for no firing pin block and better quality MIM parts.

You ought to be able to find a loaded champion for less than $1K, probably closer to $800...

You are probably right, I was thinking about the 4" railed Operator.

I just picked up one of those last week for less than $800 from Buds...

Id recommend the Springfield, Kimber does make a bitchin pistol but have they been around as long as SA? do they offer a Lifetime Warranty? Some of the stuff after the sale is what makes certain ones better than others.

Both are around $950 new at my local dealer.   If you want the laser grips go for it.  It is a personal choice.  I use them on my duty weapon because focusing on a front sight in the dark with pepper spray in my eyes and my glasses knocked off has taught me to take every advantage I can.

OOOh, 4in railed operator (drool), thats an option to consider. I'm not big on Kimber but I think their compact models have a good reputation as far as reliability goes. Let us know when you get your new piece, we'll wanna see that  BD

I've lusted after a Champion for a long time. Somehow I ended up with a Colt MKIV Gov model. I am starting to think maybe I should trade that sucker in for a Champion. I don't know what it is about that pistol, but ever since I seen one in person I have wanted it.

Thanks for the replys.  Its going to be a while, the budget is kinda long term.  Hell, I may just carry a full-size.  I've thought about it for a while now...  And apparently the 1911 SuperTuck fits all the models...

Does it really make that much of a difference when carrying a 5" versus a 4"?

I have both and both are great pistols. The Champion had work done to it.

Depending on how you carry it, the extra inch can be uncomfortable when sitting.

That's what she said.

Sorry, I've been spending time in GD today

I find the 4" is very easy to point, but I love the 5" gov't model.

I'm not sold on the reliability of scaled down 1911's.

Wait, wait, wait, now we argue about who has "better" MIM parts? That is just foolish...

As for the OP, I have a Kimber Pro Carry in 4". I love it. The only problem I have had with it was cheap Kimber mag related, switched to Wilson's and have had no problems since.

In theory, it is foolish.

In reality, Springfield doesn't have the same history of crappy MIM parts like Kimber does. Sorry.

I have owned 3 Sprigfields and 5 Kimbers.  I still have my Kimbers.  I prefer a firearm made in America as opposed to Chumbawumba or wherever Springfield has their substandard junk made.  All of my Springers looked and felt as though they had been machined by a monkey using a chisel.  All three of my Springfields (2 loaded models and 1 GI)  had FTF issues even after being sent back multiple times.  I will admit that their CS is pretty good but it still seems that for the price I really did not get a very good product.  Just my $.02.

I already own two, all steel,  springfield, .45ACP caliber, government models (1 loaded model and 1 milspec model) so my vote here will be in favor of springfield armory.

If you want an aftermarket liability safety which can malfunction and cost you your life, which can only be disabled, not completely removed, then go Kimber.

Obviously, I'd go with a SA, replace the ILS mainspring and be done with it.

SA. however I prefer 4.5" or 5" 1911's. I won't trust my life to anything shorter. YMMV

+1 that Lifetime warranty goes a long long way in my book.
