Can anybody tell me anything about a Star PD-.45 CAL that I got my hands on? It's not a full sized pistol but seems to shoot decent groups. It came with a 6 mag clip and a cheap holster...thanks

Spanish guns, IIRC?

They're okay, nothing special about them. They're certainly miles ahead of the Hi-Point crowd, but not quite as smooth as a S&W. Probably a small notch below Ruger, let's say, IMO.

They also are not 1911's.

SGB: Please educate me. It's a single action pistol, beavertail, 6 shot clip, and looks a like one? What makes the difference not that it really matter to me. This  was a swap deal that I may or may not keep...

It has no parts interchangeability with the 1911 that I'm aware of. Other than being single action they have nothing in common.  Quality of fit and finish was mediocre and the metallurgy runs to soft.  These  pistols do not hold up well to much shooting.

They aren't 1911's but they are FINE guns!

If you got it for any kind of reasonable deal I would keep it!

How many "Clips" did you get?

Thanks Guys for the great response's. The gun will be used only for 'bedside' use and occasional carry (I am not into combat or competive shooting). Only one clip, but will pick up another one later if I keep.

Star made excellent guns with very good steel (as did Astra).  Llama is the company that gave Spanish arms makers a bad name with the soft steel and poor craftmanship.  Star actually made several guns for Colt over the years.  The PD was way ahead of it's time in the early 1970s.  It was built on an alloy frame and the first successful / reliable compact .45 out there.  This was long before anyone in the U.S. figured out how to mass produce a reliable, compact .45.  Lots of police bought them to use as back ups to 1911s or for plainclothes work.  It is essentially a CCO style pistol with an Officer sized frame and a 4" barrel.  They generally had good triggers and were shockingly accurate.  Many Star designs were simply improvements or simplifications of the 1911.  In many ways, Star took the 1911 to the next level.  You have a very good pistol that is an important part of history.  Quite frankly, it is as good as any similar style pistol being made today (better than many)

It's a good cheap beater gun, much like a Bersa. It'd make a great bedside or underseat truck gun. I'd buy one if I saw one in the 200ish dollar range.
